You could argue it was inartful at best, but that's basically what science is. The media, instead of saying 'of course Trump isn't saying people should inject bleach into their bodies, he wants every possible option for killing the virus explored", are saying that Trump said injecting disinfectant will kill the virus.
"Trump never said inject bleach into your body" and "Trump wanted to know if we should research ways to kill a virus in the body with things that kill it outside the body"- these are not contradictory.
