That's the way it always works. Government takes. It does not give back.

Temporarily forever.

Government builds a bridge

Government says you need to pay $1 to cross bridge to help pay for bridge until the initial cost is offset.

Industry props up to support the act of collecting (or legally bypassing the $1 fee)

Initial cost is offset and government forgot step 2

I’m in the Bay in CA, and I already hear rumblings of them adding on taxes to help fund stupid projects related to continued efforts to combat future instances of this and those affected by it. More hobo shelters, more money for schools with objectively bad performance that are loathed by kids, they’ll probably form some retarded ‘pandemic response team’ that’ll never go away and never actually do anything. They’re already doing rapid and costly construction in my area for things that are meant to help with vaccines, which you know they’re going to push to be made mandatory here of all places.

Everybody always sees that shit on the ballot and thinks “oh cool! I want that.” Then we have yet another stupid tax in the most expensive area on the planet to live because they didn’t realize things cost money. We already have minimum wage laws putting that at almost $16 an hour right now. You go into a restaurant and they’re making $16 an hour. Then you get the bill, and you’re charged a ‘low wage workers’ tax of 10% on top of a $20 plate at a low end place, then you’re supposed to tip on top of that.

Any time something happens here, there’s a new committee formed, staffed by randoms, whose conclusion is always to impose a new tax. Then nothing productive ever comes of it. Traffic’s a nightmare, subways are falling apart, nothing ever gets done. Fuck them getting more money for anything.

The Bay is an ever escalating series of taxes that pay for things that don’t happen or don’t need to be done, and when they are done, are done wrong or poorly.

It's a damn shame what has happened to the bay area. It seems like things are close to hitting a fever pitch there though. Between astronomical housing prices, high taxes, a homeless problem which is spiraling out of control, and an extremely unfriendly business climate, one really has to wonder just how much longer this can continue until the bottom falls out. This sort of thing is 100% unsustainable. It's only a matter of time.

It really depends on what happens with tech companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook. The tech boom in general ruined the Bay Area from the good old Full House days of the 90s and before. Things are so bad now that part of the reason those companies are basically making their own cities is because they can’t sustain living here, either. Every year there’s some more stupid shit. You can’t build more housing in most cases because of the endless red tape, taxes, tolls, and even income limits that prevent it. A lot of the culture’s been eroding over time because of it too. Small businesses can’t afford to stay open, and everything ends up being gentrified to look the same. Even the designated affordable housing options are hilariously over priced too, and usually have laws in place that make it so that you don’t actually own what you’re buying. Add to that a yearly property tax on a $2-3 million dollar building, or a $1 million condo with a $1-2k a month HOA fee, with $100 dinners at a restaurant and infinite taxes on local projects that never work, and you’ll understand why even people making $150k+ a year here are basically broke. I hear rent in San Jose now is $4-5k a month from friends that have to move there for work. If you make $100-200 an hour here it sounds nice, but most of that’s siphoned off immediately. They’re clearly not using it given that we’re knee deep in hobos and broken roads.

The entire area’s a fire hazard now too from all the people. Driving 3-5 miles can take you 2-3 hours during rush hour. Parking’s more than rent in other areas. It keeps seeping out into the surrounding areas too. Many areas here are old, and the roads aren’t meant for any real traffic, and can’t be rebuilt.

1
ClownTamer 1 point ago +1 / -0

I can’t see why anyone would take Pelosi seriously on anything when her district is the worst managed in the nation. It went from a nice area to one filled with hobos, drug needles, and literal poop on the street. They don’t even prosecute petty crime. It’s this sick joke. If the Bay wasn’t flush with tech money, she’d have been eaten alive by now.

6
Butthurt 6 points ago +6 / -0

Hey man don’t forget your vehicle plate sticker tax, oh also your gas tax, and your drivers license renewal tax, so you can drive on the roads you paid for with tax money. Only then will you be able to go through the highway to the tolling booth to pay your tax to have the privilege of using the roads. Edit: you have a city sticker too right? Thanks for paying that tax.

1
womp-womp-twice 1 point ago +1 / -0

They want to be able to deduct those different taxes automatically from your account while driving around, so your "city sticker" will be a virtual thing.

Probably they will use the "mandatory contract tracing app due to coronavirus" for that as it's "perfectly suited to make it easy to pay for (insert minority here)".

We're basically coming full circle to middle-ages Europe, where there were official toll bridges and highwaymen everywhere.

ISIS might have been defeated, Iran is a kindergarden threat, but yeah sure, IT'S REAL WE NEED IT TO FIGHT CORONAVIRUS TERRORISM or so.

And as usual, with the "security argument", they can always say "see, thanks to us and our draconian laws, we kept you safe".

Nevermind that the TSA cannot prevent the smuggling of bombs on airplanes by their own security inspectors.

Or nevermind that FISA is being grossly abused using Russian-crafted Democrat-sponsored propaganda smear materials.

Nevermind that Schifty Schiff can run his own little intelligence agency and collect phone records of US House Reps (R).

The name of the sponsor of the bill was Senator Joe Biden, his proposed law was the Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 1995, introduced February 10, 1995.

This was shortly before the Oklahoma City Bombing, which ocurred April 19, 1995.

Later Joe went on to say that he drafted the bill because of the OKC bombing.

Idiots.

A fried of mine who flies often for work had the ID checker deny a US Passport when trying to go thru security for a INTERNATIONAL flight.

  1. I waiting for that movie so long. I remember a countdown screensaver that had 600+ days. It was the best movie I’ve probably ever seen in theaters. 100% pure magic.

This is actually the moral of LOTR and why its my favorite work of fiction. Nobody can resist that much power. The "new normal" is trying to sell some form of Socialism and government intrusion into your life as a means of "saving us all from extinction". They believe you, as an individual cannot be trusted to make your own decisions and not "vote for the correct person", "make the approved decisions", etc. They've been doing it with muh Climate Change™ forever. Anytime theres more named hurricanes than usual in a given year, or snowstorms that dump feet of snow, especially in an area that doesn't usually get them (nut it's not 'unheard of')... 16
duubius435 16 points ago +17 / -1

It's pretty outstanding, because this is the lesson of the ring. Humans hearts are easily corrupted by the appeal of more and more power. They'll allow the soul to rot while focusing only on one thing: the power.

When the time comes to be rid of it, most of us would find it hard or impossible to leave it. Our fathers knew this, which is why they dramatically limited the power that government had. We've been losing that limitation for so long, and now we're seeing the price to be paid. Petty small tyrants who can't be touched dictating things down to the masses "for our own good." We're getting the monarchy back year by year.

7
RiverFenix 7 points ago +8 / -1

It started a long long time ago, but they've incrementally abused the powers more and more... and each time they get our consent, it sets precedent. They write news laws, giving them the powers they already usurped, making it official - and still we say/do nothing. It's become normal. We already saw them used, in restraint. We trust - by nature...

But slowly, and surely, their abuses of power have resulted in offices with extremely broad powers and authority - like POTUS. They never intended for HIM to be there, so it causes some ruffled feathers. They know what they set up, and he's dismantling it. Giving the authority back to the people, by giving it first to the corrupt (and often ineffectual) Governor leadership. It's the classic "leave them alone in a room with enough rope to hang themselves" tactic. One of Trumps' favorites, in my opinion.

The People will revolt against their Local and State government, not the Federal Government, whom they see as protecting them and 'on their side'.

Sometimes I think that Democrats enact the policies they do just to spread suffering and misery. Maybe they really are inter-dimensional psychic vampires that feed off of our misery.

"Sometimes I think that Democrats enact the policies they do just to spread suffering and misery."

Now you are beginning to understand that they are not stupid, but, in fact, evil.

You presume that I didn't already know that.

incogneato 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maybe they really are inter-dimensional psychic vampires that feed off of our misery.

The technical term is "sociopaths" and yes, they absolutely are. Our misery feeds their greed.

I have always liken the FISA Courts with the Ring of Power. If only we could use it but just this once! We would only use it for good! Then, I promise, we will destroy it!

My greatest hope is to get 4 FISA abuses and a whistleblower in my honour.

I re-read the entire LoTR series every year... it gets more and more relevant as time goes on, right up until the last chapters of Return of the King which is basically a treatise against communism.

There is a downstate Rep. who has filed charges against him.

Blue states aren't the only ones that do this, they just take their authoritarian overreach a lot further than the refs.

Still waiting for water rates to return to pre-drought levels like promised

3
Luminous_2a 3 points ago +3 / -0

Same here. During the drought (what was that, 2015? I don't remember anymore), our water rates increased to where our water/garbage/sewer collection averages just under $100/month.

At least one member of the city council tried and tried to get a temporary provision in the order, but it was of course shot down. They "promised" to lower it when the drought was over. 🙄

1
Horkers4Trump 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah here it was the city asking us to conserve water, and then when we did they discovered that the water department wasn't bringing in enough money.

So they "temporarily" raised rates to compensate. When the drought ended, rates would go down. "We promise."

Now they use really loose definitions of "drought" to keep us paying more money.

If you don't mind me asking.

San Angelo TX

The local city/county council just decreed from upon high that, although non-essential businesses can open, all comrades . . . I'm sorry, citizens must wear a mask in public or face a $1000 fine starting tomorrow.

There was a provision given by our overlords that you can remove it while eating, but you have to put it back on as soon as you're done.

This is in Texas.

Time to vote the Supreme Chancellor more Emergency Powers.

What could go wrong?

2
AenAllAin 2 points ago +2 / -0

Ah! Yes! ...just like the "war on terror"s Patriot Act.

These measures are necessary to root out the terrorism that caused 9/11 ...but it won't do anything about the government negligence and incompetence that caused 9/11.

4 years later

Let's just keep this a little longer...

6 years later

Obama: we still need this, but we will phase it out as things wrap up.

4 years later

Why is the war on terror taking so long? Why are the terrorists getting stronger?

Obama: We're doing everything we can! No one is stronger on terrorism than me. No one could do a better job.

Obama: We really need this. I REALLY need it! Let's go ahead and bring back the expired parts.

2 years later

We have evidence from an anonymous source that President Trump colluded with Russia to manipulate the election.... by appealing to voters.

In other news, ISIS has mysteriously disappeared. When asked for comment President Trump had this to say: "Fuck 'em!".

2 years later

In breaking news, it has shockingly been discovered that Obama and the Dems were abusing Patriot Act powers from the very beginning (2008) and even spied on the opposition campaign during the 2016 election!

2 years later

Dems: No! You can't take it! We NEED it! We wants it! MY PRECIOUS!

Liberals in 2000: The government is corrupt! They can't be trusted with all this power!

Liberals in 2008: Obviously the government can do nothing wrong, we need to give them more power!

Liberals in 2016: The government needs all the power, except the people we don't like!
