As an example, and as a digression, with teen pregnancies and unwanted hook-up sex pregnancies - there are likely some tax policies, welfare programs, labor law, etc. that could be changed to both reduce these pregnancies and/or encourage the best outcome for mother, father, child, family, and community in those situations. There is so much room for agreement in the abortion debate, if the left just drops their blanket approval of all abortions we could actually sit down and put clear laws on the books that outline all of the nuances of their arguments. There's always going to be extreme opinions on each side but 90% of us could all agree on the correct way to solve this horrible problem.
I consider myself as pro-life as they come, but if we could even get the Left to agree to abortion only in the first trimester, with all the exceptions they want for rape, incest, and the life and physical health of the mother (you can always find a doctor to say "mUh MEnTaL hEalTh"), I could live with that.

The right to privacy discussed in Roe was entirely made up and clearly no where in the Constitution. Finally that is getting some recognition. My liberal friends hate when I point that out. Although I am fearful that if, god forbid, we don’t get another Supreme Court pick, and the balance tips to the left, they would hinge on some of the remarks like “it is sometimes appropriate for the Court to overrule erroneous decisions” to go after Heller and the right to bear arms. That’s all they care about, overruling Heller.

Abortion takes place in a matrix of human needs and desires. Making the act illegal does not stop the factors that drive women to abort their children or become pregnant in the first place. There is a HUGE, complicated, fraught, interesting, set of public policies and ethical issues around allowing abortion to legally exist but to make it both rare and ethically acceptable.
A blanket ban is shit public policy and leads to horrific underworld abortions and a tiered system of access to abortions (i.e. the mega rich can cancel any life, any time, the mega poor just gotta deal with it) that, compounded to other class divisions, makes for precarious politics in a republic.

Not like we are going to crack this nut in the comment section. Like I typed earlier, there is an ethical dimension, practical considerations, cultural and economic factors, that we could, as a people, work out. Figure out what works, what does the most good.
As an example, and as a digression, with teen pregnancies and unwanted hook-up sex pregnancies - there are likely some tax policies, welfare programs, labor law, etc. that could be changed to both reduce these pregnancies and/or encourage the best outcome for mother, father, child, family, and community in those situations. There are so many ways to work on an issue like this.

I suppose my stance is this: No, it's not a "numbers game" to me. Making any kind of mathematical calculation in one's head to rationalize murder and make it permissible, on any level, for any reason, is something I fundamentally abhor.
So yes, my feeling with 100% conviction and a true sense of the absolute high ground morally, ethically, spiritually and every other "ally" is that abortion should be equally as illegal and criminally punishable as every other type of murder.
Yes, sometimes a woman and/or their unborn child face truly life threatening complications or emergency situations. Sometimes, tragically, a child perishes in the womb and needs to be removed. In situations like these, of course I agree that a woman may need to (and should) seek specific types of treatment that may result in the baby's demise while providing her with life saving care. Or perhaps the situation may require what is essentially very close to the same thing as what we now consider an abortion, but is used to "deliver" a deceased unborn baby, instead of solely killing it.

The question of what life is fundamentally, isn’t a religious issue. There are plenty of philosophically minded atheists who oppose abortion because it’s very difficult to make a sound argument for abortion without also accepting infanticide as normal (which is why you see the left inching close toward it these days). The religious element is just that life is sacred really, which shouldn’t be particularly controversial regardless unless you’re amoral.
I can't reason that any abortion isn't murder. The two points I keep coming to are: 1) there is unique, live, human DNA right away. 2) pick any arbitrary time period (you used 5 weeks) now go one day back and convince me it suddenly isn't murder.
