He knew that men had to die to get things done in that war and he wasn't afraid to make the hard decisions and push his men to do what was needed. He also visited the injured, saw one man who wouldn't make it past the night and ordered ice cream for everyone there and gave that dying man a silver medal or something. That soldier ate ice cream, was happy, then died the next day.
