If Kim is dead, and right now that is still an if, the implications are pretty serious.

  1. China has been testing small nukes
  2. Without Kim around, China is now free to make a power play against the buffer state separating South Korea (America) and China
  3. NK has lots of resources China wants
  4. South Korea leader, Moon Jae-in is a secret China sympathizer who wanted to see the Korean peninsula unified. Gordon Chang has said moon would have preferred to move close to China and communism.
  5. China is worried refugees from Korea will flood into china.
  6. Instability in the region is bad for China as it leads to America being able to make moves into Korea and be literally right on Beijing's border
  7. The timing of trumps tweet last week about South Korea needing to pay more for US Defense doesn't seem random anymore when you keep these facts in mind

I have my own ideas about what could happen and why, but right now i'd like to have a high iq discussion about the implications for international geopolitical strategy between China and the west, using Korea as a proxy... especially with China believing the west is afraid to act due to the virus right now. Also if China tests it's power out on korea, and we don't respond, China will go after Taiwan next and the Indonesian pacific alliances will fall apart. Western power exists in that region only as long as the central players believe America will act to defend interests over there.

What do you guys see happening and why? What are the implications for US Grand Strategy?

5.1. South Korea is afraid refugees from North Korea will flood into South Korea.

As far as China making some bold move in connection with Little Rocketman's demise, Xi is especially weak right now, given the whole world is pissed off at him for concealing the truth about the Wuhan virus. China may be too focused on an internal power struggle, trying to mend relations with the rest of the world, and civil unrest, to take advantage of opportunities that Little Rocketman's demise might otherwise present.

It's all going to depend that creepy sister of his now and what kind of person she is.

The MSM will worship her.

Unfortunately she appears to be a whole lot healthier than Little Rocketman, and is supposedly about 5 years younger.

Wouldn’t refugees run to South Korea, not to another communist state?

I would not be surprised if china invades NK upon news Rocket Man is dead. They normally hold huge ceremonies and mourning for the death of their leaders.

The question is how will the NORKs react? I’d expect China to do a soft power move on NK. Maneuver to install A China puppet whose strings they can pull, but not be too overt (I.e. invasion).
