I'm sure they were rejoicing in the South when Lincoln was shot, but there was just as much rejoicing going on with people like Stanton and Seward and Chase. They needed Lincoln gone so they could make their Reconstruction fortunes. Lincoln's plan was "OK, it's over, back to normal." They couldn't have that.
