I absolutely stand by this title now. I am a 34 year old male and voted for the first time in the 2016 election. In the primaries I voted Bernie and talked trash to Trump supporters. Final elections I voted Libertarian (Gary Johnson) because I was getting more knowledgeable about what I was voting for. I wanted to break the two party system and plus fuck Hillary Clinton. During this primary I voted Bernie again (not because I wanted him to be president but because i was thinking of all the dank memes for a Bernie vs Trump final and I knew the SOB wouldn't win against Trump) Now since then and especially this COVID19 pandemic has really opened my eyes - Democrats are crazy. I mean I live in Alabama and majority of my friends are liberal and I love them but holy hell try and hold a conversation with them coming from a different view. They will almost break down. My friend said "oh you are one of those people" and started bashing my view because he found out I voted Libertarian. Instead of listening to me and finding common ground I am immediately an enemy basically. When I talk to both sides i listen with open ears and i understand where they are coming from usually (except my one friend who is full on "eat the rich" socialist) and I discuss things. You can't with liberals. They will not hear or tolerate your non-liberal view and they take it as a personal attack against them. One friend is so far up Hillary's ass he wont even fathom that maybe she is apart of the problem and in the same government that he claims holds and oppresses people down. She didn't win because of "sexism."
Things I've noticed during this pandemic:
- Liberals have ruined my glorious Reddit. I cant even read a damn COVID19 post without shoehorning Trump in it as a problem. (Maybe Karen you should drink bleach if that's what you took from the press conference.)
- Liberals are all doom and gloom while Conservatives have been looking for hope during this pandemic. I'd rather see "we might" then "lock the doors we are doomed second wave"
- The media and Left's obsession with twisting everything Trump does is dumbfounding. How do people listen and continue to believe everything? EVERYTHING?
- I have tried to talk to Liberals and they just push me away and discount anything I say. No meeting in the middle. I even told them the reason I dont vote them is because of the left voting base. Instead of listening and at least trying to persuade me to join them they label me as an enemy and push me to the other side. Where as the right seems to listen (I may be shat on a little but hey it's the internet) and they at least converse back with me in a good manner. Then I take a red pill ...
So basically what I am saying is I am at the loading dock ready to board this Trump train in 2020. CHOO CHOO MOTHERFUCKERS WE COMING IN HOT AND HEAVY!
Edit: Also lets talk about how the same Liberals who claim the government is racist, oppressive, and down right corrupt are now advocating full on government control during this pandemic? What a 180! Maybe, just maybe the government would handle this right and it be okay but what happens when someone in that government now doesnt believe in the same things you do? Doesnt matter you have full government control and now you are on the short end of the stick instead of the other side. I mean it's common sense when you think of the long term.

Likewise, which now seems ridiculous in retrospect, but like OP I was just starting to pay attention to politics in 2016 and the redpill did not come all at once. It's been said plenty of times, but the degree to which the media and DNC (and even Bernie himself, judging by his recent campaign) failed to understand Bernie's initial populist appeal is so apparent in the fact that they still don't realize half of the people supporting him in 2016 voted Trump for the same reasons they wanted to vote Bernie and don't regret it one bit.
Ya it’s a slow process. Even as you are discovering the truth it takes some time break years of conditioning by the MSM. That coupled with the shame for saying you’re a Trump supporter out loud.
This information is filtering out slowly but it can't break through to people that live with an abundance of fear. The fear is compounded by the talking heads doom and gloom reporting.

I think part of this is activist in nature. The left has decided at some point that if you can stop someone from even stating a right-wing argument that there won't be right-wing ideas.
Jonathan Haidt, wrote in "The Righteous Mind" (2012) That liberals cannot even understand the conservative point of view, at least, not nearly as well as conservatives can understand the liberal point of view. I think their mindset is that to even understand an opposing idea is dangerous to them.
One thing here - we should not underestimate the power of the Bernie Bloc. A LOT of Millenials and Gen Z will vote for him. Instant gratification is a part of their daily lives - even a dude I thought was super based (hard working young dude in the Marines; friends with my kids) said ‘just take it from the rich’ when I asked him how we would pay for everyone getting 2000$ a month a couple weeks ago. I’m not sure if he was on a fishing expedition to find out who were socialists or not but it shocked me.
Anyway, instant gratification. A lot of Millenials and Gen Z think that they should have RIGHT NOW what their parents built with 40 years of wealth accumulation. I very often see posts of them getting a car or an apartment and the post reads like they’re ashamed that it’s not gloriously impressive. I made it a point once to make sure I told one of them we had the same truck when he posted about it. A Bernie ticket would get a lot of young people voting that normally wouldn’t care to. That’s their big shot at skipping the long road of wealth accumulation...or they see it that way.
Do not underestimate Bernie. If anyone has a chance at taking the Presidency away from us it’s him.
It's funny you tap into something I've been thinking about here. Biden is such a shitty candidate I'm not sure I want him replaced. I think ideally we expose his rape allegations, the left lose a ton of support by proving that when the cards are down they are an actual rape culture, and then Trump stomps Biden.
It sounds funny when you say it out loud but the Dems could probably swap Biden for an intern who speaks in complete sentences and has a (D) next to their name and my guess is their odds would go up.

The thing is that Trump has effectively changed the Republican party. Hopefully it stays that way after his election too (really high hopes).
Trump was an outsider. But unlike you third party voters, We voted an outsider in through the Republican party, just like Dems thought they were voting a "non politician" in with Bernie (turns out Bernie is the deep state).

As someone who thought Bernie was anti-establishment in 2015-2016 I jumped to Trump because honestly the way the media treats him I was beyond certain that he was the real anti-establishment candidate.
It's so sad to see vast swathes of people apparently agitating in line with every corporation in the world to stop Trump and know that after he's gone they'll go right back to "Well the establishment this" and "The establishment that" and "Oh, nothing will ever get done for the people because the politicians are part of the establishment!"

I can't stand that about the left right now. I really thought Bernie was the one but when he got shafted by the DNC and became their puppet again I realized something. When I was young I was a Democrat, in West Virginia it’s the law after all ;) but when I went to college I became an Independent. And when I finally got a job and started paying a third of my income to people who sat at home all day doing nothing I became a Republican. But after two lousy presidential candidates, the horrible traitor McCain and spineless Romney I vowed I would never vote for another Republican again. And I haven’t. I voted for Trump! Trump isn’t a Republican. He’s not even all that conservative. He’s an American! A true honest to God American who loves his country and wants everyone to be happy and successful. I knew when he announced he was running that I would be voting for him. Cruz was a close second but Trump got my vote and will again. If the Republicans choose another spineless jelly fish after him I’m not voting for anyone. If Trump loses in 2020 it’s over anyways so why bother. If the Democrats get control again I’m quitting my high paying job, selling my house full of empty rooms (the kids are all gone) and either buying a tiny home up in the mountains or converting a large van into a home and taking the lowest paying job that will satisfy my basic needs. I'm similar, though I've never been a democrat, nor have I ever supported Bernie.
However, I did also vote for Gary Johnson in 2016, not because I like him, but because I also think we need to escape the third party system. I just wanted to get Gary Johnson to the 5% for Federal funding in the next election or whatever. My area went for Trump anyways so it didn't make a difference here. The best morning I ever woke up to was November 9, 2016. I went right out to Dunkin and paid for the car behind me to celebrate.
There is no way I'm not voting for Trump this time and I know there's a lot more like us. The left has moved so far out on the spectrum, even 90's Dems are going to be coming down on Trump's side.

I was never a Democrat in my life because I am Gen Z, but I would have certainly been a Democrat back in the day.
I definitely face chastisement from my evangelical parents, especially my mom, for not being conservative enough, being sex positive & supporting the LGBT community despite my being a Trump supporter. I don’t even think she considers the common ground anymore (and I am a Christian myself, albeit ex-vangelical).
