A basic problem I discovered back in the 80's is that our government officials spend so much of their life working in the government that they, and their family, and their kids all become friends, or more, with other like international officials and their families and friends. They become less "American" and more "citizens of the world".
This is on top of foreign operatives purposefully trying to make family or compromising connections with our government officials.
Many even jump around, getting government jobs with different governments!
This results in DC no longer having all of its interests in US Citizens -- it has conflicted alligences and feelings to others around the world.
