This exactly. They are up there praising Tulsie Gabbard for her anti war policy and completely ignoring how effective Trump has been on that front. They are calling Andrew Yang a brilliant guy because he has "solutions for everything" but his solutions are not real world, they are fantasy. Universal Basic Income is pure fantasy unless your currency has no actual value, which it wouldn't if it just fell from the sky.

I'd love to see Tim come here and actually argue some of his opinions.

39
Techrev 39 points ago +42 / -3

People don't understand how or why currency has value. They hear that it's printed off by the government, and it confuses them.

18
Erikabodereka 18 points ago +20 / -2

My high school Econ teacher said the only reason the dollar has value is because the Federal Reserve said so. His point being that it’s not backed by gold. In addition, scarcity gives value to the dollar.

Am I in the ballpark?

18
AgarthaForever 18 points ago +18 / -0

It has value because you need USD to pay your taxes.

Think about it this way: everyone who lives or does business in the US assumes some level of tax liability that can only be settled by handing over USD.

Imagine you locked a whole bunch of people in a room, brought in a goon squad to guard the door, and held up a bunch of poker chips, telling everyone that they had to give you a poker chip to leave the room. They'd be tripping over each other to earn poker chips!

5
neverreddit 5 points ago +5 / -0

Brilliant.

5
AgarthaForever 5 points ago +5 / -0

This is also a partial answer to the question of why governments need to collect taxes if they can print money.

8
lerm4comptroller 8 points ago +8 / -0

That's a good ballpark for a high school kid. Also, I'm glad that a libertarian got into teaching instead of the usual commie trash. (His lingo makes it as clear as a Ron Paul tattoo.)

On a deeper level, it isn't a traditional fiat currency: we're operating on what is often termed the 'petro-dollar' system. Long story short, if you want to buy commodities from the world, you want to do it in dollars. This is usually most evident with the oil market and we get particularly frisky if the relationship between our currency and oil gets threatened (hence the name). This is why we can print money with abandon without hyperinflation, btw. All that money we print ends up overseas, being used to buy up those commodities.

So, while it's a good way to explain the system as a primer without confusing basic economic principles, in reality it's very different. Abundance is actually what gives the dollar a lot of value, but only internationally. The Fed orders money from the Treasury and hands it out, but their affect on value is limited to interest rates (btw they have done nothing but lower the value of our money since their inception): the people proclaiming value in this situation are the US government as well as governments worldwide who rely on the dollar to purchase goods. Our currency is backed by no single commodity, making all this fairly untenable in the long term like all fiat currencies. Just remember: historically the "long term" could mean a couple hundred years, so long as bread and circuses stay off the public books.

(Full disclosure: I am probably a bigger gold bug than your teacher was, but I love everyone being fully informed almost as much as I love gold.)

Also who the hell knows when automation takes over. Back in the 80s AI was gonna take over everything, in the 90s they thought all software would be developed solely in India, the 2010s was the decade of self-driving-cars-are-just-around-the-corner. The future will get here but we have no idea when, and capitalism is highly effective at dealing with the details.

Also because it has ingrained itself as the defacto medium of exchange on a societal level.

In relative terms everyone understands the value of $1, $100, $1000. They know what they can purchase with those denominations, they know that everyone is willing to accept them, and so they are willing to accept them as well.

If you try to buy something with gold or silver, most people are not familiar enough with those to be confident in their value for trade. They have no idea how to determine if they are genuine/counterfeit, and they also have low confidence that they could use them to exchange for something else immediately afterwards, Even though both have high values.

Money is just a medium of exchange.

1
krzyzowiec 1 point ago +1 / -0

The idea of gold tends to be better than the reality. It’s fine in small amounts, but the minute you want to start storing lots of value, you run into problems involving security, storage, transportation, etc. (Bitcoin is ingenious in these areas)

I’d also say money could be considered a good, if you take into account time preference.

What is a loan? It’s basically the amount you are willing to pay (in interest) to have money right now. You are obtaining the money now, in exchange for paying more of it back later.

Which will kill the site honestly. As it becomes more clear that it is a farrrr left echo chamber more regular people will leave. And as more moderates leave you will see it move even further left and it will become just another socialist spewing news site. The only reason it has a seemingly large influence is because any moderates that go to /r/politics, /r/news, /r/worldnews etc. they are given a large number of the same ideals that seem to be popular so they figure that maybe this is the normal train of thought. As more people notice the echo chamber it loses any significance it once had because all of the people yelling there can be dismissed as members of that echo chamber as opposed to normal people commenting.

It is basically the same way that they painted /the_donald as a crazy right wing community. People just assumed that we were and never ventured into our subreddit. Same concept really. As stupid as their ideals are they are very good at leading the narrative.

Exactly I have used reddit for years and it has changed significantly. Normal people will continue to leave and push the average user more and more left. Soon only socialists and Europeans will be jerking eachother off to how they still can't understand why Trump and nationalism is rising when everyone they talk to is far left wing.

Jokes that were once upvoted were then looked at as "problematic."

Several years ago in Reddit when someone reposted something and claimed it as OC, everyone would call OP a faggot in the comments and it would get upvoted. Nowadays you would probably get banned for saying that.

29
CashMAGA 29 points ago +30 / -1

It's always funny to me when people claim that I'm a far-right extremist.

Political compass test says I'm basically dead center. It doesn't get a whole lot more centrist than my views.

I'm only a "far-right extremist" because the Overton Window has moved so far left that anyone to the right of Lenin is a right-winger.

10
goodbeerbetterviews2 10 points ago +11 / -1

Which can be a positive (for our cause at least). One of the reasons that we see more moderates shifting right is because where else can they go? If the media was even a 80% fake news as opposed to 95% we would see a huge portion of the population wonder how they could support such terrible ideals. It is ridiculous how much the left is protected from explaining their decisions and their shitty views.

Now I am not saying that Republicans do not have their bad eggs (there are many), but our movement is trying to remove those. But Democrats seems to be committed to bringing in even more radical ideologies.

11
CashMAGA 11 points ago +12 / -1

We're all human. Nobody's perfect.

I'll say that given the choice between your average Republican or your average Democrat, I'll take the Republican every time. The vast majority of all politicians are absolute scum, but I find the decent-to-scum ratio is higher in a population of Republicans than in Democrats.

There’s more to reddit than just politics but even that is being squeezed out.

I used to go to reddit for sports and hobby subs but now I end up going elsewhere to get the information.

I still use reddit but my time there has been cutdown drastically.

3
goodbeerbetterviews2 3 points ago +3 / -0

I agree and I love the smaller communities. But even the sports communities get extremely toxic whenever politics do come about. Luckily they have not infected my favorite small subs but I hardly go there anymore out of spite.

62
TwistedChemical 62 points ago +62 / -0

For me, once it started effecting video game bullshit with politics it ruined a lot of fun conversation. ‘Video games MUST be like this or else you’re a bigot’ fuck off, I just want to kill something.

25
side_o_beef 25 points ago +26 / -1

Heh, kill something. Imagine an FPS where the enemy is trannies. Takes the fun out of it because 40% off themselves before you get a chance to.

18
TwistedChemical 18 points ago +18 / -0

It was more

‘Why isn’t the hero a woman? Sexist”

‘Why do these two fall in love, why can’t you fall in love and have a gay relationship’

I’m all open for that kind of stuff in video games. The more options and whatnot the better...but fuck, let a writer be creative and write the story they want to write and not the story you want them to write to make you happy. Play something else.

4
CashMAGA 4 points ago +4 / -0

Plenty of RPGs have those kinds of options.

Skyrim came out in 2011 and you can be a homosexual furry if you want. Then when you introduce mods, the only limit is what your imagination allows.

Personally, I played (and still sometimes play) that game because I found the gameplay itself to be enjoyable and the collection of story-expanding mods to be substantial, but to each his own.

4
RighteousViolence1 4 points ago +4 / -0

When Skyrim came out I told my wife I required at minimum a month off marriage... she thought I was joking.

2
TwistedChemical 2 points ago +2 / -0

As I said...I’m all for people getting what they want out of games. Just don’t force a writer to write a story just for you and get mad at them when they don’t. That’s insane to me, that mentality is all over reddit and resetera.

BlackFlag 20 points ago +20 / -0

Anita Sarkeesian is a dumb cunt, self-employed shill.

Remember gamer-gate? Oh, that was all about sexism in video games, and male vs female gamers, right?

Wrong. That's what it got turned into by Anal Skeezian and her ilk. It was originally a story about a female indy game developer who got a game journalist to give her awesome reviews in return for sex. And the indy game dev tried at first to cover it up with the story of "well we were dating at the time, and I realize now it was a conflict of interest, but I didn't think of it at the time...." Bullshit. The two were never dating. Straight prostitution, good game review for sex.

But we can't have that be the story. Can't have the story be "Shitty female game dev whose only completed game to date is a shitty & depressing visual novel sleeps with game journalist in return for hype for a game she's working on".... Because then we would think women are shitty game developers and/or programmers who use their body to get what they want and cry sexism when it doesn't work.

Like that woman who complained about the "bro-culture" at Uber.... Remember her? She was the QA (quality assurance) lead. I can assure you, from personal experience using the shitty Uber app, that she was bad at her job.

Now, I'm not going to say that women suck at programming. The first programmer ever was a woman (Ava Lovelace), and there are plenty of women who possess the math and logical skills to excel in computer sciences. What I will say is that diversity hires suck ass.

12
the-new-style 12 points ago +13 / -1

The person who invented modern programming was also a woman - Rear Admiral Grace Hopper

Developing a compiler was a logical move; but in matters like this, you don't run against logic - you run against people who can't change their minds. I had a running compiler and nobody would touch it. They told me computers could only do arithmetic.

Her programming language, FLOW-MATIC, was extended and is now known as COBOL and is still in use today.

She was an amazing woman in other ways too, the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University - in 1934!

I'm totally against women in combat, because we live in a culture and a society that imposes on every man the concept of women and children first...If you had a man and a woman trying to go through some dangerous woods, the man's instinct would be to protect the woman. Therefore you weaken the man.

I've received many honors and I'm grateful for them; but I've already received the highest award I'll ever receive, and that has been the privilege and honor of serving very proudly in the United States Navy.

I was on Reddit since 2010, it's so crazy to see how "opinions" have changed. The first time I believe I noticed these changes was 2015-2016, but crazy enough I think the changes from 2018-Now are even bigger.

Of course we saw lots of changes before 2018, but you could still find reasonable voices, even if they were peppered about. But now, you can't find anything. The front page, everything, everyday is anti-trump, anti-conservative. Every post, every comment. It's totally under leftist control.

lifeisahologram 17 points ago +17 / -0

Nice shout-out for TD!

But unrelated, I just wanna point out, for anyone who doesn't think Joe is kind of an idiot, in this same single interview, within an hours time he....

First, praises UBI for giving people the freedom to focus on what matters in life and pushed back against Tim Pool who was describing people exploiting UBI to be lazy, and choosing not to work. then later Joe is ragging on comedians he paid their rent as a good will gesture so they could focus on their comedy, and they didn't push hard to try and succeed and he claims the only way you will be successful is if you are forced to survive, basically proving why UBI is garbage.

But he doesn't even notice how these 2 opinions contradict one another. He probably doesn't even view them as related. I guarantee if UBI comes up in another video he'll praise it again.

Joe is stupid.

5
FinnishNationalist 5 points ago +5 / -0

Devil's advocate: Joe's rationalization of UBI being a "moral/philosophical good" and the fact that people often do need a push in order to improve, are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

For example: It is still morally good to treat and heal a suicidial patient or a smoker.

2
IntrepidBurger 2 points ago +2 / -0

One can then counter the moral good angle by demonstrating that it doesn't work. UBI defies basic economic concepts like inflation.

3
FinnishNationalist 3 points ago +3 / -0

True. Plus the tests that we've done here in Finland did not improve people's motivation to work, it just made people feel less stressed out.

There are some minor positive ramifications to improving people's perceived levels of anxiety and stress (like health), but it wasn't a sustainable model long-term.

1
IntrepidBurger 1 point ago +1 / -0

I've also never heard one proposal that wasn't either more costly than the entire federal budget or wasn't just a straight wealth redistribution scheme.

2
lifeisahologram 2 points ago +2 / -0

Maybe they aren't mutually exclusive if he had different views on them. But his ideas on them are pretty much the same, just described from different starting points. If you take them to their logical conclusions, they contradict.

For example if he hates what his personal experiment did, making people lazy, undriven, sad potato sacks, why would he want an entire society to do that?

In his UBI argument, he argues back to Tim something along the lines of "But it's just enough to live, people will want more" His argument for UBI is that people will drive to succeed BEYOND their basic needs, and Tim's idea that people will choose not to work is preposterous.

But then he contradicts that with his own experiment of how people don't drive beyond the basic needs. The comedians he helped didn't put more effort into their comedy. They had all this extra time to focus on comedy instead of struggling to survive, and they didn't utilize it. They became lazy and undriven.

Why would he argue people won't become undriven lazy people, but then give his own example of why they do? Why would he say that benefits people, but then explain in his own example why it doesn't?

That's a direct contradiction.

2
FinnishNationalist 2 points ago +2 / -0

The way I understood Joe is that he is in favor of UBI because of the freedom that it gives people to pursue avenues and tasks that truly interest them, but he also points out that being given everything for free some people lose the drive that they need to better themselves and their craft.

It's like having a sailboat with a working rudder to go anywhere they like, but having no wind to push them. You have more freedom, but potentially less purpose and/or drive to act on it. So actually moving forward becomes even harder for some people and they are stuck in idle water.

I see what your saying about “drive” and “will” but I don’t see how that’s not a contradiction. His own experience shows that giving people money robs them of drive, so in essence UBI is directly the reason people are held back. Which he constantly complains about, he constantly says he wants society to get its shit together, and touts Jordan Peterson principals, but then touts a system in which that mentality will not thrive.

1
FinnishNationalist 1 point ago +1 / -0

Sure. You could however argue that it is not necessarily a contradiction in the sense that you could possibly manifest that missing drive in other ways than just through the necessity to generate capital.

Cultural and/or social rank could be one (meaning you would be seen even more of an utter deadbeat if you had no passion, discipline and/or drive).

1
lifeisahologram 1 point ago +1 / -0

But doesn't his experience address cultural and social rank you are referring to? His comedian wanted to succeed as a comedian, not necessarily become super rich, just focus on comedy, and improve their comedy. He thought giving them money would give them that freedom to do that, and not have to focus on distracting things.

But once earning a living was no longer necessary, they not only didn't care about earning a living, because they didn't need to, they no longer cared about improving their social ranks as skilled and talented comedians. Is that kind of the point?

I just still don't see how they are divorced.

If he isn't stupid, he is at least on somebodys pay-roll and has handlers that tell him what he can and can't discuss. He sold out at some point. I was a fan but it became too obvious to me that he wasn't genuine and was pushing away and rejecting certain ideas and topics.

He is balding in the center of his head, and without the beanie he looks like a different person. He wore it even ~10 years ago though, so it's possible the excessive wearing of it caused it in the first place. But it is and was a key element of his style anyway.

  1. Spez didn't edit 1 person's comments, he edited hundreds.
  2. AFAIK r/The_Donald's last gasp was the mod takeover despite a year-long effort to work with reddit's moving goal posts.
  3. spez believes that reddit could sway elections, and clearly thats what they're trying to do

If Joe Rogan actually got Trump on his podcast it could potentially regain my respect for Joe that has dwindled since he got super mainstream and started playing dumb and shilling for man-made climate change and democratic candidates amongst other things. I'll happily eat my words and re-subscribe if he has Trump on and gives him a fair hearing. I'm doubtful that it'll happen though. I think Joe has been bought.

2
InTheArmsOfThePepe 2 points ago +2 / -0

Same.

Rather than going straight to the source, he's fallen into a gossipy Chinese-Telephone approach of he said she said bullshit.

The lefties at google, reddit and twitter are gonna get angry. If you don't support people like Tim, maybe you should start doing so. Cause his enemies will be using the power they have to silence him soon.

They are both main stream voices who have been beautified by YouTube to tell you what you want. Neither have a conservative bones in their body. Believe them and see the continued destruction of our once great country.

8
Fabius 8 points ago +10 / -2

100% agreed.

Joe Rogan is the left wing stoner dad who's cool with you smoking pot in the basement with your buddies. He comes down to talk about conspiracy theories and trippy shit every once in a while.

Guy fucking endorsed Bernie Sanders, ffs. Bernie Sander is a fucking moron. And I don't say that frivolously. Bernie Sanders is stupid. He's a dipshit. He's a dumbass. He's never said a smart or wise thing in his entire life. Go ahead and find me a clip on Bernie Sanders saying something smart, or profound in any way. He's just a commie huckster getting rich off the system. Fuck all Democrats.

-3
Pres-Trump -3 points ago +1 / -4

If you look into Rogan's producers you'll see exactly why he back that heathen like he did. It's all about control of what you see and hear. And once you realize who is in control, you see the whole last century differently. At least if you are smart enough. Some people can't see beyond their eyes, or fingers in the internet world.

7
Deplorable_Yankee 7 points ago +7 / -0

I tend to agree and refuse to listen to either of them. Their opinions change depending on who they are talking to and whichever way the wind blows. Ya'll can do what you want but Bongino is a much better show.

3
CanadianMeathead 3 points ago +3 / -0

Here's how I look at it. Like great actors (DeNiro, Carrey etc) who have horrible, horrible political views, they are still great actors and make entertaining movies.

Joe Rogan is one of the best interviewers ever (up there with Howard Stern). None of them are perfect, but we can't stay in our own bubble or we become like the left, on the right.

I respect the game, not necessarily the player. Or vice versa, or whatever it is.

2
Deplorable_Yankee 2 points ago +2 / -0

I hear ya, I have limited time in the day. Therefore, I watch what I want. If others want to listen to him, cool.

1
Pres-Trump 1 point ago +3 / -2

At least he doesn't stray from conservatism. too many these days give in to Gen Z and the Millennials for clicks.

5
Deplorable_Yankee 5 points ago +5 / -0

People are free to watch what they want. I choose not to watch them. That is all I have to say about beenie boy and wishy washy Rogan.

0
Pres-Trump 0 points ago +3 / -3

And all I have to say is the idiocy of Humans is infinite. And I wouldn't be the first person who says so... just maybe the smartest. (Sorry AE, I've got one point on you.)

7
Southboundanddown 7 points ago +8 / -1

Rogan especially. I only watch Rogan when I want to hear what his guest has to say, nothing he says is remotely worth consideration IMO.

3
Pres-Trump 3 points ago +5 / -2

Most of his guests have nothing good to say either.

3
Southboundanddown 3 points ago +3 / -0

I mean, you're not wrong. I will always click a Dr. Rhonda episode though.

1

That's why my wife started watching Joe, after I put on a few of Rhonda Patrick's videos.

-1
Pres-Trump -1 points ago +2 / -3

I honestly never heard of her, who is she?

1
Southboundanddown 1 point ago +2 / -1

A nutritionist I think is the best title to describe her. She's a researcher who has done work on the effects of various vitamins and minerals on DNA and overall health.

4

Fuck this shit.

These two libtards will never see the light on anything. Joe Rogan is a pothead postmodernist with no principles, and is easily swayed by the next effective persuasion. He never takes a stand on anything. He's a typical, irresolute weed smoking highflyer. It's just boring.

Tim Poole still believes government is the answer, and for that he'll absolutely never figure it out.

4

Yes

4
erlenmeyerbong 4 points ago +4 / -0

I've been thinking that this is a deep state plan to completely split the nation. By first forcing Reddit and other social media sites to ban conservative thought, it forces the right to create their own alternatives. There could be nothing worse for a democracy than no discourse between it's citizenry. When there is no discourse, there is no chance of swaying voters. We are being forced into echo chambers. We will only ever be presented deep state candidates

I'm scared that this could spell the end for America

Reddit is infiltrated by CCP - if you use it for your sensemaking you will become an antifa terrorist ;)

Can someone pls help me. I’ve recently been listening to some of JRE podcasts but I have personal issues with some of his opinions. Namely his drug use and advocation of others to use drugs like pot and DMT. However, some of the topics discussed on his are extremely fascinating. They are very wide ranging and interesting. Specifically space travel, AI, automation, political correctness, physics, and others.

My question is as follows, is there an alternative to JRE that discusses these issues in an entertaining manner without the crudeness of JRE?

Listen the to the podcast. It's pretty good. Neither are pedes but they're both willing to entertain ideas, admit when they're wrong and be pretty entertaining. I'm Team GEOTUS 💯, but I like both guys. Beauty and the Beta and Matt Christiansen are better political podcasts but for what this is, I liked it and usually like JRE. Except when he has total cucks like Bill Maher and the Labour party redcoat on.
