Our son attends an out of state university. He chose it because the academics are solid, but also because he wanted the experiences it offered being away from home. He didn't go to college to sit in his bedroom on a laptop taking classes. He went to experience living in a new location, to meet and interact with students from all over the country, to have discussions in class with professors and classmates, to explore student activities that were offered, to take part in labs and conduct research, to try new things like working at the campus radio station or participating in events.
Distance learning has been less than stellar the past six weeks. It's okay, but not what he signed up for. Unfortunately, we've decided that if his school does not resume normal operations in August for Fall semester it may be a better choice to take a year off and work before returning. I don't think we're alone in this opinion and I predict colleges will lose a fortune if we don't get America up and running ASAP.
Quarantine the elderly and let everyone else develop herd immunity. The median age of death in Minnesota is 86 and the majority of those deaths had comorbidities. Also, a large percentage were from assisted living facilities. Let college students return to campus and keep nursing homes on lockdown.
I doubt it.
This stay at home shutdown is not sustainable. Once they start laying off university and government employees the tide will change.
