I actually found myself close to tears when reading this. My wife has lupus and a very weak immune system. She has been taking hydroxychloroquine (plaquanil) as part of her management regime for some time. Over the last two months we have been doing everything we can to keep her away from the virus, knowing that people with her disease are especially vulnerable. We are in our 50s and it hasn't been easy, but what other choice is there? This gives us some hope that she is a little more protected than we previously thought.
My immune system is fine, but I have been extremely careful avoiding social interaction in case I get it and pass it on to her. Our income sources have dried up (and no PPP for our small business thanks to congress messing about as usual) and I've stayed away from any gig jobs that might pose risk to the wife's health. Still, we have savings enough to make sure she stays on the medication so we are luckier than many.
This report (and the stimulus that Trump fought for) are the two small lights of hope in an otherwise dreary landscape of constant WHO/CCP/media misinformation and panic mongering that just seems designed to do nothing other than wear us down. Four more years of the only guy in Washington who seems to give a damn about those of us out here who actually work can't come soon enough.
I’m also on Plaquenil for an autoimmune disease. The mixed information has been so frustrating. I have been waiting for this kind of study to give me some clue as to how careful do I need to be. The one thing I’ve found funny is the people who have complained about the side effects. I’ve been on it for 18 months and I don’t have any side effects.
