The bigger issue was that under the British constitution, it was illegal to tax people who did not have representation in parliament. The American colonies, despite being the most prosperous part of the British Empire, had no representatives in parliament. This is why "No taxation without representation!" was a rally cry among patriots; they believed that their rights as Englishmen were being violated.
