It would be nice if the "No-Mask for you either cuz muh freedom" tin-pot despots downvoting actually had a negative effect rather than a positive one. I mean, I have gotten +70 points for arguing that mandated masks is BS, but the itty bitty titty committee should mind its own business about voluntary masks... Its that last part that bunches up their panties, it seems.

I don't think downvotes affect the user's total points at all. They just provide a way for people to vent on a thread. I actually like this system. It helps reduce the echo chamber problem, in which people are hesitant to make comments or posts that go against a currently popular view. And it eliminates the power of "downvote brigades", whether they're legitimate pedes with inflexible vews on certain topics, or trolls and shills.

Truly bad posts and comments that reflect poorly on the forum should be handled via the deport button, and that seems to be working pretty well.

Ah! Your point about the downvote brigades is great, I didn't think of that.

Unfortunately, home-grown downvote brigades are a real thing too, in addition to the trolls and shills coming from outside. But the downvotes-don't-count system certainly helps make this forum less attractive to outside trolls and shills. They can't downvote posts at all, and if they downvote comments, the downvotes don't hurt the user's score.

It would be nice if there weren't so many real pedes who feel the need to downvote any comment they don't agree with, but giving them the "power" to register downvotes that only count on the thread, lets them vent, so I figure it's a good thing. I save my downvotes for garbage comments like the one telling you to "fuck off back to reddit."

Righton, I don't mind changing my mind, if there is a reason to... I also don't mind the flames, it means people care. I just try to point out dogma clothed as reason and fact. One big point for me though, I want people to openly express their opinion. Most are harmless, and likely somewhat founded, even if with limited info. But some others are trash, and we need to know who those people are. So, please 1A, all day :)

Yes, me too, as long as it's done with civility.

Well, I want downvotes to not look like upvotes, that's my real point. Trust me, I'll take internet fire.. it's just words.

wth are you talking about? The anti-mask people and anti-bullshit people aren't saying you can't wear a mask. They're saying you can't force others to do so (or to do all the countless other things), because of your fears. You make your choices. Others get to make theirs. Trouble is, only the hysterical are being allowed to force their will on others.... not the other way around.

Then there is agreement, on mandatory masks, just defend someone for choosing the wear a mask, see what happens :) But, downvotes add to reply internet points, this would encourage trolling, my main point. My secondary point is just fun.. As a community, we really need to brush up on the difference between freedom, and conformity.

I'm not going to defend them because I think the vast majority of them are just easily led idiots, living in fear for no reason. I don't have to "defend" them or act like I agree with them, to concede that they obviously have the right to do so.

Thank you for your input. Your vote about downvotes counting equal to upvotes has been tallied. Have a good evening.

No one cares how many points anyone has. Do you ever actually look at how many points someone has? I don't. The only time I do is if they seem like a really obvious troll... then I might look at their profile.
