Chess, Reading and Sports can become addictive but generally not as much as playing a video game or playing slot machines because the former activities generally take more time to receive the “reward”...most Video Games (not all) allow users to compete games in a matter of minutes or sometimes quicker which means the user is receiving the dopamine hit from the reward faster and allows them to turn around and seek it again immediately. The more this goes on the more of the reward one needs to achieve the same feeling increases. And remember most of the time the player isnt aware of the chemical processes that are driving this they just feel like they need to keep playing
