I don’t understand why so many on here hate on him so much. Whatever his personal politics are doesn’t really matter, he proves over and over that free markets are the only way to go. Tesla actually made the electric car viable by making it appealing and flashy. He’s been able to do things in rocket tech that government agencies could only dream of. Yeah he took government subsidies, but he didn’t make the subsidies and they were offering them, so he’d be stupid from a business standpoint to not take them. Would any of you not take a tax break and willingly pay more out of principle? Besides he’s the only electric car company that could possibly survive without them.
I think the subsidies thing is the reason why the people around here who hate on Elon hate him. Ultimately I'd say he's a pragmatist. The gov is handing out money, you put yourself at a competitive disadvantage not taking advantage of everything out there. It is possible, if not ideologically pure, to suckle on the government teet while strongly advocating for the government to remove their subsidies, and I think that's where people struggle.
I get that, but anybody on here who judges Elon for taking subsidies but cashed the $1200 check is being a bit hypocritical. Subsidies need to be stopped before they’re offered, because anyone not taking them is at a disadvantage. That’s why they’re called a perverse incentive.
The subsidies aren't given to tesla directly, it's given to buyers of the car.
Not the same at all. The stim check is the Government giving MY money back to me. The Tesla subsidy is taking MY money and giving it to someone whose buying a $100,000 luxury vehicle.
As I understand it, there are no subsidies for big oil. The subsidies are only for small companies like the ones that lead the fracking boom and helped make us energy independent. I'm ok with that.
I know less about subsidies in those markets, but I'd probably find things to gripe about.
Tesla isn't the only one to receive this subsidy either, all greener vehicles receive it. But I still don't like that I'm paying for someone else's luxury.
There is a difference - the gov shut down the place so I could provide for myself.
Then it shut down other places and after that companies put up a hiring freeze for months.
This is coming from a man that rode a bike in sub freezing temperatures because my car got wrecked by an illegal and my insurance (which had uninsured motorist) where faggots. The illegal got 9k and skipped the border, come to find out.
Did I complain then? Nope, got on with my life because I had to.
This was Trumps idea to keep The People affloat, so fuck off.
If this relief bill (again Trumps idea) wasn't passed you'd have 20-30 million homeless, right now.
It’s not a comparison, the point is if subsidies are offered ppl will take them, and would be stupid not to take them just on principle. The covid checks were obviously needed because of the Dem imposed lockdowns, that wasn’t the point.
On the one hand, sure. On the other, a car I don't need to change the oil in, put gas in, and only needs a battery replacement every ~10 years is a car I'd want regardless of how dumb green energy is. The reason for it's invention is stupid, but the car itself is quite nice and worthy of buying in its own right.
What is the electrical bill for charging? Genuinely curious. Plus, how realistic is long road trips? And with Cali turning off it’s grid for wildfires, that seems to throw a wrench into things...
The news talks about this guy all the time, and my impression was generally positive in spite of, or maybe because most coverage is negative. Not shocked that this tidbit doesn't make the usual talks about him.
Pretoria and other cities in South Africa are pretty cool to explore in Street View, almost everybody has 8ft high walls around their houses, most people in the richer neighborhoods have electric fences, and other people have metal spikes or razorwire.
I wouldn't 'vacation' there in real life though, would probably get carjacked or robbed.
"rant" Love how cnbc characterizes that. I'm also seeing "melted down" (their new favorite phrase). He sounds like Spock. It's the most measured, calm "rant" i've ever heard. It's like he's listing the things he wants on his sandwich. "I'll take mayo and mustard. Also a little bit of salt. Making people stay home is fascist."
Elon Musk is scared for the simple reason if America turns into a socialist state (which is happening). He would be one of the first to be put up against the wall.
He would become an international wanted man.
Because people like Elon would be a danger to the new socialist American government. If it's still call American beyond that point.
This shit is making me lean more and more towards becoming a libertarian. The government has wayyyy too much say in what I can and cannot do. If they want to issue recommendations as to what I can do, sure. But when they start forcibly closing businesses and public parks, they can go fuck themselves. Let people do what they want to do.
A revolution is brewing... especially in California.
His rocket work has been a great step towards private enterprise in space; his cars not so much as they depend on huge federal handouts to buyers which are the most regressive form of taxation possible: the cars are purchased by relatively wealthy people with credits paid by all taxpayers including middle class and working poor.
That being said, it’s great to hear him rip on the stay-at-home orders. It must make the libs heads explode since he is usually one of their darlings.
I dont always agree with Musk,, but he's got it right on this one.
Science: Electric cars just arent practical, battery capacity just isnt there to make it feasible. You'd need an insane amount of heavy, unsustainable and dangerous batteries
Musk: How about 7,000?
Science: yeah that sounds right. see thats insane
Musk: Let me show ou the Tesla 3.
Science: We tried self lading reusable rockets. Its not feasible as you have to use way more fuel it inefficient
Musk: Hey boys, they said we just need more fuel Slaps on extra fuel tanks
My only gripe with Musk is that for as much as he talks about AI being dangerous, he sure is trying really fucking hard to get his cars to drive themselves.
He's not wrong.

Do you have similar gripes about subsidies for the oil industry and for farmers? I'm not suggesting it is wrong to have issues with these.
As I understand it, there are no subsidies for big oil. The subsidies are only for small companies like the ones that lead the fracking boom and helped make us energy independent. I'm ok with that.

Don't be a faggot and compare the two pede

because his cars, and the green movement, is one big hoax; but, as a capitalist, I applaud his entrepreneurial spirit

I’m all for freedom of choice.

We love Elon here at TD
He's pretty based
Yes we do.
He also paid back the subsidies years ahead of the due date and haven't taken any in many years if I recall correctly
Yes. This is what his detractors always "forget" to mention whenever they bring up the subsidies argument against him..
I did not know this! Thanks for the info.
The news talks about this guy all the time, and my impression was generally positive in spite of, or maybe because most coverage is negative. Not shocked that this tidbit doesn't make the usual talks about him.
Even with the subsidies he fought and won a lawsuit to make the bidding process more competitive.
I think people forget Elon Musk was raised in SOUTH AFRICA until he was 17. He knows this shit when he sees it.
Pretoria and other cities in South Africa are pretty cool to explore in Street View, almost everybody has 8ft high walls around their houses, most people in the richer neighborhoods have electric fences, and other people have metal spikes or razorwire.

But but but walls don’t work!
Elon has smoked weed. Dude knows whassup mane.

That's the full audio. His fascist comment starts around 39:12
thanks for the better link. Im not trying to give msnbc clicks. and yeah, that "rant" was like listening to an audiobook.
Well put. It was a tired audiobook, at that

Sounds like someone wants to MAGA. Can't wait.

I hate electric cars and all the tech they put in those things
But wtf I love tesla now
I dont always agree with Musk,, but he's got it right on this one.

Self aware ai is dangerous. A Tesla doesn't know what it is, it's just a fancy program.
