Eh, as I understand it, the "wear a mask in public locations" policy is aimed more at the unknown, asymptomatic carriers.
Whether that's because you're recently infected, incubating, transmissible, but not yet suffering symptoms, or truly fighting through it, but having no symptoms (yet still transmissible). If a person is unknowingly n-COVID-19 positive, any mask will help catch respiratory spray, reducing spread, reducing probability of transmission. If they're not, it's pointless.
Those with the "weight on the chest", fever, etc, should really be isolating and resting while their immune system fights it off, unless they're going to a clinic or hospital, for testing (confirmation of infection) or treatment. In those cases, the mask is absolutely warranted, to "catch" direct respiratory spray, and reduce the infection risk to others.
So you have no problem with me assuming you have life threatening cancer, with no proof otherwise? Raising your insurance rates through the roof? And forcing you to take a medication that's not needed? That's not how a free country works or how the medical profession works. You can't take away a persons rights based on the unknown. Do you search a persons home because he MIGHT be a criminal, even though you have no evidence? Then you can't force someone to take a medical precaution that's not needed unless you have proof otherwise. It's bullshit and everyone knows it.
I didn't get into when, where, or who is making a policy on folks wearing a mask. I only was talking about when it makes sense, and who benefits from a mask being worn.
I popped into Costco on Monday. As of May 4th, they have a policy that all persons within the store, must be wearing a mask (or face covering?). They are however, providing "surgical" style masks at the door for those not already wearing one, who do not have one available.
I groaned my displeasure, then went back to my car and retrieved my dingy, dust-covered N95 dust mask I've used many times while woodworking. When it's simply a private business that chooses to set and enforce a policy, I have the choice to vote with my wallet. As do the rest of customers, who may otherwise choose NOT to shop there due to feeling "unsafe", if they had no such policy.
In any case, since it was first advised, I've maintained social distancing while interacting with others, in retail and elsewhere, as my primary defensive technique, in addition to reasonable handwashing. I've suffered no Novel Coronavirus-19 symptoms, so that seems to have been sufficient so far.
