It all depends on whether a big pharmaceutical corporation, like let's say...Gilead, had a patent on it or not.

No patent with many companies producing penicillin cheaply = no efficacy or benefit

Big pharma patent with $1000 a pill = MIRACLE DRUG!!! EVERYONE BUY IT!!!

Insurance companies will not pay for Remdesivir unless required to by law. Too expensive when a known generic replacement is readily available.
