Fun fact! Dr. Phil was kicked out of the American Psychological Association for sleeping with a client, and then refusing to do any of the rehabilitative options they gave him (e.g., additional supervision, training in ethics). For that reason, he can still call himself a doctor, because he has a doctorate, but he cannot call himself a Psychologist.
Not gonna lie, if I were a single psychologist and slept with one of my fully adult clients and didn't feel that I was taking advantage of them, I'd probably tell the board to kiss my ass too.
If you're treating someone who has anger issues or whatever and isn't exactly vulnerable and you click with them, who fucking cares?
I get why you’d say that, but the rules exist for more of a macro reason. Being a psychologist, you’re tapping into people’s deep emotions and that power is extremely abusable. There was an issue with psychologists doing exactly that and screwing emotionally vulnerable patients who came to them seeking a safe person to help them. So to address it, the rule was made, don’t ever. Get your rocks off elsewhere. I think the rule is a good one, but the truth is, yes there are many 1:1 cases where it wouldn’t be harmful.
