I love those memes on shit sites like 9gag and Imgur that show how we're supposed to honour these "heroes" working in "COVID war zones" and all I'm thinking is - I've seen footage of doctors and nurses working in warzones. I don't remember them having the time to film themselves, shaking their ass or re-enacting movie scenes.
People in genuinely stressful situations are tired and sleepy, after hours working.
I'm well over this whole "nurses are HEROES" phenomenon. Congratulations, you're doing your jobs. I'm doing my job too, which also involves interacting with the public, and unlike you I don't get a dozen different sterile N95 masks to protect myself. I get some home-made cloth if I'm lucky.
You know who else works in the same conditions? Doctors and surgeons and paramedics, and I don't see them shaking their asses in choreographed TikTok videos and posting self-congratulatory tweets about how they're "fighting on the front lines for YOU!" Probably because they're too busy actually working to save lives rather than sitting around on Twitter while waiting to empty bed pans.
People are always like "oh, you can't dismiss their bravery just because it's their job; the 9/11 responders were just doing their jobs too!" Well there's a bit of a difference between working in a clean and sterilized hospital during a pandemic when you have all available protections and are likely in an age and health group which has essentially a 0% chance of dying to a virus that only really kills elderly with pre-existing conditions...and rushing into a burning and collapsing building to rescue survivors. Oh no, you might catch a cough and have to stay home for a week! Such bravery! How many nurses have actually died of China Flu? Is it even in the triple digits nation-wide? Because 412 emergency workers died on 9/11.
Not to mention that I don't see firefighters stopping to post self-congratulatory tweets about how brave they are before entering burning buildings.
