I think calls are being screened by Google and sent to people's voicemail automatically. This one's person phone answered like, "Hi this is the Google assistant, can you say what you are calling about?" Then there was a beep for me to speak, and I said,"I want to speak to Paul." Then it said "Sorry this person is not able to talk right now."

Google fi or Google voice let's you push a button to screen calls not on your contact list. Whatever you say gets texted to them in real time and they can choose to pick up or label your number as spam.

I would just be honest upfront and they can choose to talk to you and pick up, or they will block your number as spam.

It's a new age answering machine to screen calls basically.
