I think the original intent was to 'verify' that a particular account was actually that famous person, so people wouldn't be tricked by a fake account. What it really is: The 'blue checkmarks' are our betters and we need to bow down before their wisdom and pithiness. They usually can get away with a lot more shit than us peons would, unless it's a conservative.
