reddit is asshoe.

"My grandpa is 85 and lives in an assisted living home, not a full on nursing home, and nobody gives a fuck there. The management who runs the place barred all visitors indefinitely but most residents have their own outside doors so there's no way to enforce that really.

My grandpa has still been going to the Tom Thumb across the street like three times a week without gloves or a mask. He still hosts is unofficial "wine socials" with other people living there, and people who don't live there, multiple times a week. We're talking about 15-25 people, all above the age of 80, not social distancing and not wearing any PPE... because they genuinely don't give a fuck."

No, they don't. Why should they?

At 85 years old- hell, at ANY age, but that's beside the point- you can die of anything at any point in time. Why would any of them piss away the little time they have left by hiding and cowering from something whose lethality numbers PLUMMET every fucking day???

So they'd rather they just stay isolated in the nursing home, possibly going to die soon, without being able to see their family or friends, without being able to see the world again, completely cut off from anything happening outside of their room... for 18 months?

Sometimes there are fates worse than death. I've noticed what you described is a trend with a lot of elderly folk. Seems they'd rather not live potentially the last few months or years of their life shut inside and in fear.

Comments like the one that I posted just go to show the lack of humility that always characterizes younger generations. For younger folks, "not dying" is just a matter of waiting on hold for tech support to fix the problem with a vaccine. Older folks think "man, people didn't used to get to live as long as I've lived." Like you said, why the hell would they want to spend their last days worried about dying from coronavirus? We all have an appointed time.
