Don't take this to be ALL Ace stores; the one I just went to in OC only had tape on the ground to 5 feet away from the checkout and no casino cage for the clerka and could stroll the aisles in peace slinging a cheap Cobra clone. Each store is locally owned which is better than what I can say for HD

YES! Each Ace store is a locally owned franchise. My local store is very based, as noted in another thread..
