The two aren't connected. Most methods to create variations of viruses aren't by direct genetic modifications. Or the virus could have been completely natural but stored there.

now that the media is saying that it's possible to have come from a lab,
i'm pretty convinced that it was genetically modified, and even possibly released on purpose
