"Talked with a young relative yesterday, who is a nurse on assignment in NYC at the Harlem Hospital. How's it going? Better every day, fewer CV patients every day. There are a lot of upset nurses among the assignment nurses who are staying in the hotels. They are upset because patients who could have been saved are being allowed to die, with no effort to save them. CV cases are triaged, and if the patient is old and quite sick, they are not going to get much care other than comfort care. These nurses have worked in hospitals all over the country and have never seen anything like this, and they are appalled.
Other than that, things are going quite swimmingly."
You'd think that these reports/complaints from these nurses would be followed up with the urgency that is warranted. Obviously not.
NY people, if you have elderly family, make sure that you have, or get, medical power of attorney for their health care. And if you are next of kin, you have the right to demand to be informed of the patient's condition and treatment. If you are not, try to make sure the next of kin is advised, so they can try to monitor the situation. Document everything, every call, who you spoke to and whether they provided you the information and followed your instructions. Keep in phone contact with the patient continuously, make sure they understand and give permission for their treatments, and if they are unable, then the p.o.t. or next of kin must take over. It's challenging when you can't be there in person, but persevere relentlessly!
I hope to see a lot of wrongful death lawsuits come out of this.
Even better drive out of NYC for care. I am hearing the same about Sweden. My friend's sister is a doctor in Sweden and extremely upset. Says the people in nursing homes are just being left to die. Also she is not getting proper PPE. Bad stuff going down.
