Its not about the power trip, its about the only transferable skill set for some.
I was in an infantry unit, 90%+ of guys that got out became cops or correctional officers. It almost all about just having a steady job and income from my anecdotal exp.
Not for nothing, but soldiers have a much tougher standard as to when to authorize and use deadly force. A cop just has to "be in fear for the life." That shit doesn't fly if you're in the armed forces.
Think about that, in a literal war, enemy combatants are are given more consideration by US troops, than US cops give American citizens.

This could be that if a soldier fucks up and shoots someone and that combatant's family goes on the media crying that 'he wuz a gud boi! derka derka!', that soldier will be crucified.
Whereas a cop will be put on paid leave, basically a free vacation.

Over there (spent 3.5 years between Iraq/Afghanistan) the enemy is maiming and killing your buddies and other units regularly. The enemy looks just like the civilian population, you cannot tell who it the enemy until they shoot at you or blow you up, even then it can be near impossible. They look far different than back home and have some what can be considered gross habits to us westerners. They treat their women like dogshit, I’d say like animals imo. Slapping or beating a woman in public will elicit zero reaction from passers by in most cases. In Afghanistan, the adult men rape young boys just as they were raped as children. The Afghan Police and Afghan Army have young boys on their bases and camps, it is extremely commonplace there. We Americans KNEW full well what was happening but were powerless to stop it, imagine what that does to your conscience?
In America, you’re among Americans. Are there bad and evil ones, sure. But 99% aren’t blowing your friends up etc.
Not saying there are none who come home and power trip, there definitely are.
But the majority in my pretty extensive experience where honorable and brave men when they served and after they come home. Some are a little crazy too haha, almost have to be a little to sign up for the Infantry during the peak of the wars!
That’s my honest perspective. Hell, imo cops that have never served are MUCH more likely to power trip from what I’ve seen.

I want the smartest candidate and who I think will be the best fit on my team. I dont care if they're blue, purple, from planet vulcan, etc. Are they intellectually curious? Can they work independently? Do they understand basic data visualizations?
My wife has an interview this week in the tech field to float her while she preps to take the MCAT. She is definitely going to slip some girl power shit in there. The company she is interviewing with eats it up... more than the fact that she’s actually competent and will legitimately work on a problem until she finds a solution that actually is efficient.
