I mentioned to my mom that we've flattened the curve and are ready to start reopening, but she doesn't believe me, thinks I'm insane, and google only gives me articles about how China handled the virus to much better than we did.

I get most of my covid news from here and there's a lot of talk about how we've flattened the curve, but what are the actual numbers?

We completely squashed the curve. It got flattened so bad that hospitals are empty and even furloughing staff due to so few patients. Further lockdowns are 100% unnecessary.

Flattening the curve was language used as a means to not overwhelm the hospital system. Its less about the actual data and the curve itself and more about the projected result of the curve... the hospitals. Regardless, many states are now on a downward curve but infections go back up, then down, then up but on a downward trajectory.

That doesn't matter much anymore, since its widely known and reported that the US hospital system is NOT overwhelmed whatsoever. Many hospitals have closed, or furloughed staff due to lack of traffic. The system is humming along as necessary to deal with critical cases as they come in. Thus, the country needs to re-open.

So you and your mom need to understand there is no value in the curve if the hospitals are operating well under capacity. That was the only reason we ever locked down, never.. I repeat never to make the virus go away.

Tell your mom she is statistically going to contract covid, if she hasn't already. The virus is not going away.

This. Flattening the curve meant that the same amount of people are going to get infected, but at a slower rate. There is some scientific basis to that, and it can actually be argued that it makes sense. It is literally impossible to eradicate the virus by forcing everyone to remain locked inside.

The purpose of flattening the curve was to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. The hospitals are not overwhelmed, ergo, we flattened the curve.

You’re doing it the wrong way around. It’s not up to you to prove why the country should reopen, it’s up to her to prove why the country should stay closed. Freedom is the default position.

By flattening the curve, instead of preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed, it financially devastated them.
