I believe I posted this in that other Donald site so for all the newbys here, this is why.
I don't call myself that because I'm the oldest person here because I'm probably not. I use ElderPede because I believe I've been on this internet thingy longer than most, if not all here. I took my first peek in 1990 when I joined AOL and got a taste. I then found .irc and then .usenet so within one year I discovered the mysteries of the internet. Been on since then and watched the evolution of www. My only regret was that I didn't teach myself to code back then.
Anyway I appreciate all the respect you fine folks show me. It means a lot to me because all I have to offer now is history. I love all of you patriots and await reading your memes every morning. What really amazes me is how many smart brains we have here, and we do! ...KAG!
We love you too, random old guy! (signed middle aged guy)
I had an Apple II back in the early 80's. You're not the only old guy here, however, I am definitely not a boomer.
Aol too ElderPede. Remember the various chat rooms...:)
Fellow elderpede here, Eisenower baby. Remember well the Tandy computer, 64k floppy disc storage, dial up modem and AOL. Believe the computer, monitor and printer went for around $700 in the late 80's.
Young people look at you funny when you tell them you were alive when Ike was POTUS. Come on ,kids, it's not that long ago.
The first memory I have of TV was Eisenhower giving a speech. I was maybe 4.
On some old floppies we used to punch an additional hole in the sleeve to use the other side as well. Used to use a WANG "word processor" that was the size of a small desk.
Elder Granny here, my first computer was an IBM PC the first year they came out, 1980. $5000 for computer, color monitor, and dot matrix printer, 2 floppies and no hard drive.
If that seems primitive (it is) well listen to this: in my very early childhood, plastic had not been invented yet. We had Bakelite and cellophane that's all.
Yep. My first had a tiny hard drive. No Windows. When that came out I discovered the internet, but I never used a system like AOL. (My father was one of the first Mac guys. He used AOL. Designed Mahjong tiles for my mother. Both are deceased now.)
Been online since 87, started on Prodigy, my dad was an IBM guy here in silicon valley.
He still has an 8088, 1mhz...my first was an 8 with a 20 meg HD.
What changes we have seen...
Wow me too, Packard Bell 500. Damn that HDD was loud, you could read the output of "dir" live as it scrolled by. Good times.
Mid 80s Commodore 64k/1541 floppy and a phone Modem checkin in....
Side story ElderPede: A friend and I dialed up the Library about the same time period 87'/88' to check out some books, It WAS an amazing experience and took about 3 days for the books to come in the mail. We were way to excited to receive Library book we could've just walked 5 min to pick up! But we were hooked on finding like minded people online to chat and game with....
Good Times.... Good Times.
KAG.... ElderPede.
And no drag queen story time.
Probably not, but usenet had some weird shit in /alt
Oh yeah, I remember how pics were posted in pieces and ascii-coded.
And I remember this topic title popping up "o.j.simpson.drive.faster".
Straight to the Top!!
I started on a TRS 80 back in the day. Technically I may be an elderpede but this place keeps me looking and feeling young.
Love you ElderPede! β€οΈ
First computer was a Commodore VIC-20 (3.5 kilobytes of memory, baby!) in 1980. Been in the digital world ever since. Young or old, keep on fighting the good fight, pedes.
Usenet was a goddamn golden age, man.
I'm 51 and we're not old, we're the Classics!
Youngster
My first computer had a 1300 baud modem.
My first computer (1975) had toggle switches and binary readouts, and I think it once asked me what a modem was.
That doesn't make me OLD, though; while I admit to being past my expiration date, I'm STILL IN MY 'TWEENS!
Tween today & tomorrow? ππΈπ€
'tween "old enough to know better" and "there's NO WAY I'm this old!"
I ran Amiga 500 with a 2400 baud modem and then 14.4 eventually 56k. Used to dial up the local library and telnet to state college vax to play mudd. Old school.
Good to know about you. Been online since around the same time but diving in with both feet when USENET was hot. Sure has gotten crowded here since then.
Windows made a massive difference in usability. Plus, no online shopping in those days, very few puctures, and half of your time was spent waiting for the pages to load on slow dial up
Yeah... (the dark web), usenet. The way people talk about it, you'd think usenet was a living being. I have to laugh when I hear people talk about (the dark web), lol!
Cool Story. You are very important.
same boat as you
I learned Basic in 1980. Does that count??
I didn't even think about computers back then. Good job pede, without people like you, we wouldn't have .win right now. Some very talented people put this site together in no time. If you were part of it, thanks if not, thanks anyway.
Aww thank you but I didn't help create the .WIN! I did, however, post a bunch on the_Donald, run Linux and hang around on 4chan. Totally useful!
It's not important who built this site, the important thing is that it's here, up and running 100%
Thank you to whoever was involved, with much respect!
History is in scant supply these days, glad you're with us!
me too pede, me too!
The evolution of the internet really is incredible. Despite all the cuckery we wouldn't be here without it. Hell Darth Pantsuit would probably be president in a world without the internet.
I loved usenet, too. Used to stay up all night on it. Younger Pedes can still find it by searching Google for usenet... I am not sure how Google got it.
usenet takes the imagination to a different matrix.
