True, they've all become so disheartened after years and years of no representation or defense against legal abuses that I don't think they've realized they can.
Most of them spend more time trying to emulate leftists, than trying to sway them. I call them "eventual Democrats" They'll get there... just 10 years later.
Sometimes you have to emulate leftists to get through to them though. They won't be swayed if you come at them full swing, they'll just cry to their echo chamber and double down.
I've made progress with many leftist friends/coworkers by subtly introducing facts - without ever outright disagreeing with them - and letting them come to their own conclusions. My hardcore Bernie Bro coworker now knows that Russiagate was a hoax, that the electoral college is essential and that we can't just rely on popular vote, and that he shouldn't "Vote Blue No Matter Who". He was planning on voting for Biden after Bernie dropped, but now he won't be voting at all, and I don't think I would have been able to achieve that if I hadn't emulated him to an extent.
IMO it's not so much a matter of being afraid to be openly Republican in public (though there is some of that surely), but more so about not "othering" yourself from the people around you so that they'll actually listen to what you have to say.
