A lot of the 'failed' studies we saw are poorly applied. The issue wasn't about the sample size, or randomization, or double-blind. The issue was that they were trying to treat seriously ill patients, which ignores the mechanism by which the treatment works.

The hydoxychloroquine prevents the virus from taking hold in your system, so earlier treatment leads to better results. The azithromycin treats (or prevents) the secondary bacterial pneumonia that is extremely common with respiratory viruses.

If administered too late in the game, the patient is already undergoing a cytokine storm. That's what is mainly killing people. The persons' immune system is unleashing all it has, and is basically indiscriminately attacking everything. A younger individual can survive this in most cases, but an older individual, or people with other conditions, are going to get completely wrecked.

Don't forget the zinc, which people like Dr. Anthony Cardillo absolutely swear by. Zinc naturally helps prevent the virus from replicating and makes the treatment more effective:

This is a very good short explanation. You have obviously studied and understand it. Are you a teacher or clinician ?
