I was born too late to explore the planet and too early to explore the galaxy. :-( If I were a young man today, I'd almost certainly join the Space Force. It is our future, period. As it is, I'll just be a middle-aged guy sitting here in my Space-X hat and cheering for all the young people who will, hopefully in my lifetime, get to do the things I wanted most to do.

I'm right with ya, brother. Hey, at least we had the 80's. :)

36
raybiker73 36 points ago +40 / -4

Damn right. They may have the stars, but at least we had the best music. And they may see the moon or the planets, but they'll never get to see Van Halen, Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica and Kingdom Come on stage at Monsters of Rock '88!

As a 21 year-old, I wholeheartedly agree here. I even like the hairstyles yal wore back then(mainly the women lol)! It also must've been nice to talk to each other without having to deal with everyone having their head pressed into a smartphone.

Yeah that was better. But you know what you missed that you can be glad you did is SMOKING.

Motherfuckers smoked EVERYWHERE. I mean they smoked on fucking AIRPLANES!! Buses, planes, trains, in cars, at work, in restaurants, it was disgusting. The air in Whatever room you were would turn blue with cigarette smoke, everything smelled of smoke.

It was a goddamn nightmare if you didn't smoke. Lots of great things from the old days... but in this one case life is better now.

13
Scroon 13 points ago +14 / -1

I didn't smoke in the 80s, and yeah I feel your pain. But now that I do smoke, I realize I missed one of the greatest fucking times on the planet.

I'm not talking about chain smoking, but having the FREEDOM to sit down anywhere you want and light up with a coffee or beer...or just chatting with a stranger at a bar over a couple of cigarettes...if you've never done it you have no idea what you're missing.

10
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 10 points ago +10 / -0

Things have gotten too crazy now where you can't smoke ANYWHERE. There oughta be some smoking bars...and now entire universities have it so you can't smoke anywhere on campus, now that's just crazy.

4
CashMAGA 4 points ago +4 / -0

Arizona resident who's yet to kick the habit.

It gets so miserable going outside to smoke when it's 110 degrees or more. Kill me. That said, when it's winter time and you find a bar with a smoking patio, there's no better thing in the modern day than sitting down with your buddies, lighting up, enjoying a beer, and chatting for a few hours.

raybiker73 2 points ago +3 / -1

It'll be 16 years for me come July. 3 packs a day of Kool Filter Kings. Started in about 7th grade. If I can quit, anyone can. That said, to this day I still get a craving for a cigarettte once in a blue moon - outside in the early morning, after a big meal, etc. My Dad quit smoking around 1980, and even he still gets the occasional craving.

Tobacco is a fucking terrible. Do a drug that is actually worth it. Slow suicide.

I can say this too...ive been addicted to tobacco.

2
Nellie_the_Beaut 2 points ago +2 / -0

I was an occasional “social smoker” in the 80s and I agree - nothing like sitting in a blues club listening to some cool live music, with a date or some friends, drinking a well made cocktail or whisky, late on a Saturday night, and enjoying a cigarette if you wanted. Nice ashtrays on the tables that were immediately whisked away and replaced, matchbooks for the asking. Nobody giving you dirty looks. Atmosphere. It’s a lost art.

7
Paul_Revere 7 points ago +7 / -0

It was even worse in the Fifties. You couildn't go anywhere without coming home stinking of stale smoke.

I actually smoked back then and even I couldn't stand all the cigarette smoke. Never sat in a smoking section of a restaurant because yuck.

Ironically, I now have the same hair style I sported in 1976. In fact everything is now like when I was 16: long hair, low gas prices, and I'm grounded.

Why downvote me man. I am a product of the 80's. Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden. I had the posters and black light.

6

New Wave fans would like to speak with you.

2
Shakakka99 2 points ago +2 / -0

I watched those too. Saw Depeche Mode at Madison Square Garden, I think it was 90'. They were great live. Most bands were. This is back when playing and writing music was an actual requirement of course, and no one played or wrote the songs for you.

2
XxxRDTPRNxxX 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, I'm into classic rock as well, 80s new wave is probably my favorite genre though. Never got to see any old bands live as I was born at the end of the 80s and didnt start getting into the classics until my 20s.

It really does seem like good music went underground in the 90s, and we got a couple of decades of bland washed out rock that all sounded the same.

But on the bright side, I think we're going through another golden age right now. Modern pop music is the best it's been since the 80s and there's a huge explosion in great EDM, electro-pop, and synthwave artists bringing back 80s vibes and taking it to new places.

The eighties were the eightiest time to be alive. Like, y'know, beyond awesome and stuff.

Also, why risk the youth on space exploration? Send the Gen-Xers. We're still relatively fit and have a lot of experience to help us survive against the alien hordes.

I had teenage fantasies about Maggie from The Last Starfighter. And I once played Asteroids for more hours straight than I care to admit as an adult.

1

Maggie was crushable. I was definitely jealous of Alex, when she wanted to take him down by the lake.

10
Mathelm 10 points ago +10 / -0

As a young person, one of my greatest dispointments is that I wasn't able to go to AirForce Academy and eventually serve in uniform in USAF.
Know that not all millenials/Zs suck.
Hopefully if the Space Force will take off, and be able to have a good, strong and robust program.

2
PensivePatriot 2 points ago +2 / -0

As a young person, my greatest disappointment was getting to the Air Force Academy and learning that I am absolutely atrocious at math.

SpecialOfficerDoofy 8 points ago +8 / -0

Don't sell yourself short, I had a few dudes in their late 30s early 40s when I went through boot camp, also had a LT when I was in reserves that was 70 and joined up cause she was bored. I know I'd re-up in a heartbeat to explore the stars.

I will be sending you all a postcard from Mars then my dudes. Also I bet you could get a waiver for that, but waivers are usually case by case basis.

A muzzleloader is any firearm into which the projectile and usually the propellant charge is loaded from the muzzle of the gun (i.e., from the forward, open end of the gun's barrel).

Maybe we'll load our laser guns from the front :p

I was 5 years old when the men landed on the moon. I remember sitting crosslegged on the floor in front of the TV watching as Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon.

I got goosebumps. It is still, to this day, one of the highlights of my life. Even at 5, I understood the magnitude of what I was watching.

I firmly believe that putting a man on the moon is, still, man's biggest accomplishment.
