It's interesting seeing all kinds of selection bias going on and seeing people not take into account that not everyone has the same kind of job they do.
Teachers? Salaried workers in government, federal or local? They are not hurting. Many of them are working from home or not really working.
Other highly educated workers? Many of them are working from home because they can.
Guess what? The people who actually make things work and build things are still having to go TO work and DO things. That water treatment plant isn't running itself. Your sanitation department isn't operating from the living room. Someone is still driving the trucks and still working the distribution centers. Construction work is still happening. Maintenance is still happening. People are still stocking shelves and running cash registers at the grocery.
You know who doesn't KNOW any of those people? Typically your highly educated, white collar, salaried person. They are "sheltering in place" meanwhile there's a whole lot of people going to work every day.
Meanwhile there's a whole lot of people who have lost livelihood and are loosing livelihoods. I've heard people say "people are willing to sacrifice lives so that they can get a haircut and eat at Applebees" ... well, you know what? There's a whole lot of people whose lives are built around those things that you call frivolous. We're not bored. People are literally loosing what they've spent years building. They're loosing what they counted on to live.
And it's spreading to these white collar salaried people, too. Healthcare is laying people off and eliminating positions. Education is now, too. Soon your nonprofits and other businesses will start eliminating positions because donations and demand is being cut off. You won't need engineers, marketers, MBAs, or advertising people when demand for new products has been killed.
