You could also be seeing a different type of large hornet known as a cicada killer. This is about the time you'll see them as the cicadas start to come out of the ground. I've had a few in my yard and, at first, was concerned they were Japanese Hornets until I researched it further. Cicada killers, by the way, are not aggressive and are of little concern.
