Merrick Garland and I agree - Hilldog would have appointed Lynch to replace RBG. RBG was probably planning her retirement when Trump won. She's been hanging on ever since.
Garland's nomination was caput by April of 2016, before the tarmac meeting. A new President H. Clinton would have no obligation to renominate 0bama's nomination. Why would Lynch commit a fairly evident crime to wait for RGB to retire? Is there any evidence at all that RGB would retire? None that I've heard.
If anything, it would have been a poke in the eye to the GOP to appoint an Obama nominee. Regarding RBG - none that I saw either but there were rumors of her retiring to let the first woman president nominate her replacement.
She would stay on as AG but pick up RBG's seat when she retires. Scalia's seat was to go to that Garret(?) guy Obama floated. From what I understand

RBG should have been worried Loretta Lunch was going to eat her to get the spot on SCOTUS.

there was talk of HRC sticking with Garland herself back in 2016: https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/08/what-happens-merrick-garland-if-hillary-clinton-wins/
