It’s the problem with focusing on something just because you can measure it. They are focusing on “COVID-19 deaths” because official figures are easy to gather and put out. And there is a “goal” number (0). It’s perfect for box-checker types, but comes at a high cost.
If it were done right, we’d look at overall US deaths this year vs other years (apparently that data is available weekly). As long as we were roughly in line with other years, we’d keep on business as usual.
You are right - it is ridiculous that we are sacrificing able-bodied 18 - 55 year-olds to save an 80 year-old with multiple pre-existing conditions. Let’s hope we get opened back up fairly quickly.
This is the fucking truth. If I were elderly, I would NOT want this lockdown to be occurring now just so I wouldn't die. I'd wager that most elderly feel this way. I would figure I've lived my life and the economy and everyone else's lives shouldn't be put on hold for my "safety."

It gets worse, a I’ve got a friend that’s a fireman. Another fireman committed suicide. They said (probably correctly) that it was due to all the stress of lockdowns, etc., but then inexplicably listed it officially as a “COVID-19 related death” (he didn’t have COVID-19 at all.
So we are literally staying at home because people staying at home are killing themselves.
