So going back to the beginning, the CDC / Scientist were right to freak out. We were told that we have a SARS like virus with an infection coefficient >4 and with a 2 week asymptomatic but infectious period. That is terrifying, like perfect storm scenario. Whether you trusted the data out of China or not, it looked very dire. Hell, Boris Johnson said that China was likely under reporting by 18-40 fold. That is such a weird range, it looks like a confidence interval.
But now that we have more information no one is willing to step back and say "Ya we probably could have done that better, but better safe than sorry." They would get slaughtered politically, so now it is this bull shit ok "we are survivors" now we got to slowly rebuild and be super duper extra safe.
Millions of people have become overnight germaphobes. You could probably scare them even more by telling them how bacteria is becoming more resistant to most anti-bacterial soaps (and I'm wondering how much of that is just fearmongering now).
Then there's people who live with the elderly who are afraid of getting their elders sick. Hasn't this always been a risk with influenza though? Is everyone under 50 supposed to change their entire lifestyle so that people who live to be 80 can live to be 81?
If it behaved like a SARs (10%) or MERs (30%) with respect to mortality than ya everyone under 50 should have stayed locked in place. If it had those kinds of mortality you would see 1 out of every 30 40-year olds dying. That was the initial fear. But its utterly stupid to have shut down everything without first stopping all air travel, bus travel, and public transportation.
No, but this seems extra deadly to the elderly. People already stayed away from their elderly relatives if they got sick, they would've just been more cautious with this until it blew over.
