I think he injected the last 30 million dollars he had into SpaceX the year before he landed the NASA partnership for their success with his Falcon 1 rocket. This partnership money helped float SpaceX further.
You gotta hand it to the guy. He didn't just take all his money and sit on it as he dumped it into stocks or something. Nope, he took MASSIVE risks, and almost lost everything to build SpaceX. Guy is a visionary, and a true risk-taking entrepreneur. I at least can respect him for that.
