She still believes Trump called white supremacists "very fine people."
She believes Trump told people to inject themselves with bleach. She claims she read a transcript of what he said... and believes he said to inject bleach.
There's a whole host of dumb things she's buys into, but these two things are... just braindead.
She keeps saying she's frustrated she can't trust the media and it's hard to know what's true, but she knows with all her heart that she hates Trump. That's her starting point, and she works backwards from there, no matter how contradictory. But it's actually scary how vicious and gleeful she is in her hatred. After 4 years.
Does anyone else find this shit terrifying up close? Not funny, not annoying, not isolating... TERRIFYING.
My parents were like this, now they’re voting for Trump in November. You want to sit down with her, grab a lap top, and debunk everything she believes, cause they’re all lies. Be patient and try to stay calm. Good luck friend.
I was not on the Trump train in 2016, but didn't have TDS and didn't really pay attention to him much. There was a blog post going around that debunked every media lie with evidence, which I read and found it informative. I sent it to my mom at the time, she never read it. She doesn't read anything I send her that isn't explicitly left-wing. I try to debunk whatever she brings up when we talk, but she jumps from one thing to another, and might calm down a little bit, but next time I talk to her she's all worked up again and seems to get amnesia.
I'm sorry for you having to deal with this. I'm lucky. My elderly father is a true pede and has been from the start. My Mom died shortly after the 2016 election. One of the last times she ever left her home, even as sick as she was, was to vote for Trump. She passed before the inauguration, and I wish she'd have been here to join in the fun. I hope you can get through to her eventually, before it completely consumes her.
Exactly! This is terminal! She claims she read a transcript and still believes he said "inject bleach"! When I gave her pushback, she said, "well, he said something dumb." If she doesn't actually believe that, then why lie? If she's okay with lying, then why does she say Trump is a liar and that's terrible?? Never mind a lack of logical consistency, there's no moral consistency there.
She says she's never liked him, even before he ran for office (and seems to be proud of that). But she claims to not trust the media?? Growing up, she always called politics kabuki theater and recognized the two parties were working together to fuck us all, but she would always pull the lever for Democrats. She spent 8 years shitting on Obama, but suddenly "he's the best president we've ever had" and in regards to Obamagate, says, "if it involves Obama, I'm taking it with a grain of salt." ???
Thanks for the vid--I think I had it on my watch later list before. I'll check it out.
It's hard when literally every topic of conversation gets steered towards America bad > Orange Man Bad.
It makes you wonder how much other stuff they are so off on. Can we trust them to drive, or to cook, or to just do the right thing most of the time when it counts?
I keep seeing other pedes say, they're your parents, love them... I do, and help her when she needs it. But I don't feel like I can trust her.
Think about it, she watched the news all her life, its normal for her to get her ideas from the channels she always watches.
It took her forever to cut the cord... about a year ago, I think. But the crazy part is she always says the media is full of shit, but then parrots even the dumbest of their talking points. "Inject bleach" was kind of my litmus test for a functioning brain and... she failed it.
I work with some very intelligent people who are sharp, very rational, and educated. I admire their thought processes and I really do learn a lot from them. But as soon as we talk politics, they’re completely backwards. If I present a logical argument for Trump (or against Obama), they scoff back with some sarcastic cliche (likely picked up from the talking heads on CNN) designed to terminate the discussion. It amazes me how such smart people can be so closed off to ideas that aren’t in line with the MSM herd narrative. I agree it IS terrifying.
The media truly is an overwhelming manipulative agent. And no one, not even me, is immune to it’s power. Be careful what you let into your mind. Think critically always. When presented with a supposed ‘fact’, ask yourself ‘what would it take to convince me it’s not true?’ Being humble and aware of our own cognitive biases is key. Those with a ‘know it all’ mentality are lost. Only our subtle influence can nudge them towards the right direction. But ultimately, it’s up to them. All the best.
My terminal is tilix. It hasn't let me down at all.
This five minute video from Brandon Straka might help her. Good luck!
Man, I've been trying to work on her for a few years... she's definitely swayable, if I'm around and talking to her frequently, she seems to chill out for a little bit. But then she goes right back to this programming. And she just closes her eyes and plugs her ears if I try to link her to anything that isn't explicitly left-wing.
I suspect she's getting emails from orgs filled with talking points- either voluntarily or forwarded from friends.
Ones that for years she has viewed as honest ethical good people.
But those of us outside the propaganda and hysteria loops recognize it for what it ism
I messed up my own Mom's reality and natural skepticism horribly.
I can't say I have broken their hold on her, but maybe made a dent by providing excellently sourced rebuttals proving they were lying to her on a few items not directly Trump- which then slowly forced her to doubt the OTHER THINGS they state as truths.
But you may need to accept that her hatred is more important to her than facts or the truth.
We actually talked about the coronavirus stuff, she's cautious but also suspicious of the media, and I debunked some of the information regarding that, which she was more accepting of. Except when I said we have done the most testing done per capita, then she was immediately suspicious because America Bad... then kept defending China.
Maybe that's the problem. She's got TDS, but also ADS--America Derangement Syndrome.
I wonder about people who say America is bad. I watched Candace Owens the other day and one of her favourite rebuttals in relation to America is the devil built on slavery “ok, where would you rather live, and when are you moving?” What country is the shining example of what they want the US to be or follow? There isn’t anyplace better. There is nothing stopping an American from moving to another country, I feel like we get an easy approval stamp just based on country of origin. Even Canada and Australia that get held up so often have serious first amendment (and in Australia, 2nd amendment) deterrents. We are so spoiled in the US that we don’t notice all the downsides in other countries and only see the shining examples the MSM sheds light on.
A few angles I like to take with liberals: 1) All of the mainstream media is owned by six corporations, and that’s not good. Too much consolidation of power, not enough diversity. Libs have been trained to hate corporations so they are often receptive to this idea. Lots of good infographics out there too that show the whole media food chain. 2) Talk to them about how the corporate media tries to make people scared and divided to get clicks and TV viewers and how destructive it is to play on people’s emotions like that. Compare all the different fear stories in the media over the years and ask them to contrast that with their own lived experience. Is their daily life really so traumatizing or is that a calculated manipulation by corporations? 3) Ask them if they really truly believe Epstein killed himself. Mention all the guards falling asleep at the same time that all the security cameras conveniently broke down. Then tie that to the child trafficking rings that were about to be exposed and why he was killed to cover that up. This works especially well on women who feel naturally protective of children. Stay away from making it all about Trump, since that is usually their biggest trigger point.
She's on board with 1, she's sort of on board with 2. She thinks the media is divisive, but only by making whites/men/Republicans hate everyone else. We've talked about things like how we don't know anyone who has been raped, so the crazy 1 in 6 5 4 3 2 women have been raped stat can't be right. We're black, she doesn't live in fear of white people. But she just gets amnesia and "America is racist" and "women are the niggers of the world" (yes, really). Never asked her about 3, I'd be terrified to find out if she thinks Epstein killed himself...
The MSM has been emotionally manipulating the masses for a long time. Every headlines is supposed to illicit an emotional reaction so the synapses fire together stronger, creating stronger beliefs.
People legitimately had emotional breakdowns after Trump won 2016. A lot of people here say “they’re just fucking crazy” (myself included), but I think it’s more than that. Those people aren’t just “crazy”, they’re emotionally manipulated to the point where they have that type of reaction because they believe Trump is “literally Hitler”. It is terrifying, but it’s also sad.
Pray for them and drop your red pills strategically (I try to use Socratic method to drop my red pills)
Oh yes, the media has been inducing mental illness into the population. Definitely.
I told her I try to get as close to primary sources as I can and articles that link to their sources, because the media is unreliable. She started asking me how to verify something about $X amount spent on Trump going to Mar-A-Lago, and I told her I don't know anything about the topic (I don't, because I don't really care), and asked where did you get the information from? (No answer.) Why do you trust it? (No answer.) Where did your source get their information from? (No answer.) If the media is unreliable, why do you immediately trust this information? (No answer...)
Have no idea if anything is sinking in. She seems to have amnesia every time we talk.
I questioned this. If we found something, would we really have broadcast it world wide? Sceptical, right here.
Just ask her , If POTUS is all that? How can everyone in power is against him? Let her explain that?
She doesn't believe everyone is against him, and thinks the media likes him because he's good for ratings. Went around and around in circles on this...
i was verbally attacked by my wifes uncle at a 5th grade basketball game. There probably is no going back.
I just find it scary that everything revolves around "fuck Trump." There's no sense of right and wrong. After debunking some misinformation, she asked me why I'm defending him, and I told her I'm defending the truth, and she laughed at that. She thinks it's more important to validate her hate than follow the truth, wherever it leads.
I've tried avoiding talking politics with her for the last few years, but she finds a way to steer any topic back to "America bad," and eventually, "Orange man bad," because she assumes everyone agrees with her.
I'd love to try this, but she refuses to read or accept any sources not explicitly left-wing.
I love my mom and continue to be a good daughter to her, but when she's viciously wishing death on everyone who disagrees with her, and vocally okay with political violence against everyone she disagrees with, and is showing no moral consistency... it does make me a little nervous.
Have you shown her the complete very fine people thing? Or has she only seen the soundbites?
She's definitely only seen the soudbites. I brought it up as an example of the blatant lies about Trump the media has pushed, and told her about the very next sentence in which he explicitly said he wasn't talking about white supremacists. She just dropped it without acknowledgment and jumped to another topic.
Changing topics is how liberals concede defeat.
Here is the actual transcript of that press conference
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-vice-president-pence-members-coronavirus-task-force-press-briefing-31/
I gave her push back on that, then she immediately backtracked by saying, "well, he said something stupid." ???? So Trump lies, and that's bad, but it's okay for her to lie??
?????????????
He did slip up but he only human. He did not sound smart or presidential in that moment.
He dealing with hostile press it going to happen sometimes.
The part that's crazy is that she KNEW he didn't say "inject bleach," yet claimed that's what he said, that's what she read in the transcript... and only downgraded it to "something stupid" after getting pushback.
She knowingly lied, and thinks it's okay just because it's Trump. WTF!
I'm lucky, I was able to bring my mother around.
My brother, on the other hand, is a lost cause.
Just casually put on a Trump Rally and let it play every time they are around.
When they announced OJ was found not guilty I was in a gym full of people. They ALL started cheering and laughing and I swear I was the only one not happy. How many of those people do you think hold that same opinion today? My guess is not many. Give it time.
