Gold and silver only have value so long as someone who can be trusted is able to assay said gold and silver. Doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it, just be aware that it's not going to get you far if someone doesn't trust it to be real or of stated purity.
If that's your concern buy American silver/gold eagles or junk silver. Don't need anyone to assay those. Very hard to counterfeit and widely recognized.

I was thinking more about learning how to do the assay myself. Might be a nice skill to have in the near future.
