Your children will be put into government mandated indoctrination camps, where they are brainwashed to embrace the new madness that rules your society. Your influence on the children is minuscule because you work all day (you'll have no choice, and no alternatives), and dissidence is punishable by death anyway, so you have to let it happen.
Once the indoctrination of the society progressed sufficiently - not forgetting the mass murder of class & race enemies in unbelievable quantities - times get a bit more friendly. You're still supposed to spy on and report your neighbor to the officials for any form of dissidence, but people are largely used to it. People who witnessed the horrors in the beginning of the very same regime grew old or died already due to stress, black lungs or other terrible conditions.
Then over the course of a short time the economy finally collapses, the government officials lost their interest to rigorously uphold the regime as they once did, people grow more and more dissident and question the ideology openly - and then it collapses, all at once. A time of utter poverty starts - where before you got your basic needs served but stripped of any pursuit to strive for more - now you struggle to eat food that is not riddled with mold for years. Countless of jobs are lost, unemployment surges, addictions raise, human dysfunctions, domestic violence. The government officials and people close to the government get away relatively well - they keep their nice houses, their agricultural property, their (say: other people's) money, etc. Maybe even their position in government as if nothing happened.
The police and other bureaucrats are even 10 years after the dark era ended just as corrupt as they were before - not only could you bribe them for most things, they also sought to get you for trivial things so that you have a reason to bribe them. But that's ok, people were used to that for a long time already. Decades... maybe millennia.
To some, the memories are vague - a combination of simple times, and weird systems - for others it was a time of normalized madness through which they had to sleepwalk in order to survive.
But it is certain that nobody would ever want to wish this tyranny over anyone else ever again. We learned our lesson about socialism and communism. It was harsh. It was harsher than anything else a society would ever have to endure. And when someone mentions their socialist fantasies, we will point to our history books and ask: Did you even read that thing?
