For my non-medical field frens: Dissociative fugue is a state of altered mental status most typically associated with dementia. Patients with dissociative fugue will often times leave their homes, escape the nursing home etc. and appear to be traveling somewhere intentionally. Many times families will report them as being lost, only to have them be found wandering through a park or neighborhood unaware of who they are, where they are etc. but they know they are going somewhere. It's essentially like a bout of moving amnesia. Likely, Joe is out in his huggies running round his neighborhood sniffing fence posts thinking they are little girls.
