If the dems lose their aura of being pro-immigrant or actually caring about people, they lose most of their voting base - and honestly I think that has already been happening for a while. Their reputation is now closer to corporate establishment quo pushers that want cheap labor than a bernie-esque movement that some people actually had a real belief in.
