Twitter sells old, inactive accounts to marketers. I have several ancient accounts that I don't use, but each has unique, extremely complex passwords. Every so often, I lose control of these accounts without any notice (password change email, etc.), and they instantly start following all sorts of companies.
I'm always able to initiate a password reset email and get back control of the accounts until it happens again. I've got no idea why they don't change the email addresses associated with the accounts.
