You are confusing particulates with organic or chemical vapors. The former can be blocked without blocking the latter. It is why some people who paint professionally give themselves neurological damage thinking that a particle filter will protect them when using chemicals such as paint thinners. You can get a good P-100 mask that will block out all bacteria and viruses. It won't protect you from chemical warfare though.
vapors are molecules only a few atoms wide. thousands of times smaller than a virus. that being said a sock or cotton bandanna is not stopping anything because the holes in the cotton are millions of times wider than the droplets the virus rides around on.
