Constantly touching your face other mucous membranes will most definitely heighten the chances of exposure to both yourself and others, mask or not. If you end up contaminating your hands because you're touching your face it's the fault of the user not the mask itself. And even then the items you may end up contaminating will be limited in scale.
The mask isn't designed to prevent contracting the virus, it's to help limit it's spread by stopping the majority of droplets from coughs, sneezes, and just talking from spreading very far by keeping it within the mask. Because it's possible for someone to have the virus and not really noticed it wearing a mask is beneficial to help preventing it's spread.
