Things become accepted by every scientist in the world only after extensive research and scientific study. There has been no positive study on the effectiveness of n95 masks by the general population in suppression of the flu, cold, or coronavirus (novel or not).
N95 is simply a rating on the size of the particles that can get through the mask. That’s easy to prove. But it doesn’t explain if it actually helps stop the spread.
In fact, there have only been negative studies. Studies have shown zero point zero effectiveness of wearing a mask and the spread of the viruses. That is to say that despite old wives tales, the mask can be shown to have no effect.
Science only exists when you have proof, no a belief. There is simply no proof.
Go for it. Try to find any sort of study that links the two. You can’t. It doesn’t exist.

Is there published research with recreated similar results? No. There is none of that so it isn’t settled.
