Mind if I take it up? I think the issue is that, yes the masks reduce the amount of droplets that would be ingested, but in practice with common and untrained users, there is no statistical positive effect. Further the process of safely handling the mast pre and post application adds new vectors for the virus to be introduced.

So, if everyone did what they were supposed to do, there is a solid reason to think masks work. But in practice not enough people do a good enough job to avoid the cross contamination.

I think there are lots of examples of this sort of thing happening. Usage of antibiotics is a good one. If everyone handled the medicine appropriately, you could sell it over the counter. It would be cheaper, and easier to get and so on. The reality is that most people don’t use antibiotics correctly (not a matter of smart or stupid, but it’s reality). As is the case you have to get a prescription. Further doctors are told to follow up with patients to make sure they are using it correctly. Also of interesting note is research that shows that even doctors don’t follow the regiment correctly a large percentage of the time.

Exactly, even if everyone were to use masks as like a professional would, it still leaves both the eyes and ears exposed and susceptible to droplets. A big misunderstanding is that masks will prevent you from getting infected when that isn't what their intended purpose is. A standard surgical mask is designed to prevent its user from spreading anything that is expelled from their mouth or nose not safeguard a person from disease.

In reality the best way to keep yourself safe is to maintain a reasonable distance from strangers, keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and nose, and wash your hands frequently.

As a whole it's not an entirely bad thing that people are wearing masks since they could have Covid-19 and be unaware. What is bad is the government having a knee jerk reaction and strong arming people into wearing masks.
