In My State of Cucknecticut, you have to offer an intruder a sandwich, and then wait until you've been bludgeoned and stabbed enough to warrant a warning shot.
That is a homestead law. It is different for each state.
Here is a list for the pedes. Remember if you do shoot an asshole in your home when the cops come they are not your friends. Give them your name and state you were in fear for your life. Then ask for your attorney. Not one more word. And never shoot anyone running away. Asshole and elbows means no go.
In California I'm pretty sure you're supposed to shoot yourself to avoid inconveniencing the intruder. Googling "stand your ground california" should get you an explanation of whatever ridiculous ass laws are on the books down there.
Lock up the gun until you both have taken an NRA class in gun safety. They will fill you in (and scare the pants off ya) about prosecution in your state.
Don’t take google advice on something like this.
One thing to keep in mind when killing someone is it comes with a lifetime of bad dreams. Pray you never have to do it. The fear and anger it took to pull the trigger won't be there tomorrow. Love Texas
that's good! Look it up under "use of deadly force" instead of 'gun' -- usually laws use the broader language, but they'll define what counts as deadly force. Might be boxer's hands, for example. Some states (and I doubt it's California too) have "stand your ground" -- you don't have to run away or take great measures to avoid a problem someone else is creating. But in some states they expect it to be in fear for your life or someone else's--which women generally can pass more easily as a test, given size/strength differentials--while you are in your house, not on your porch etc. In VA, where I live, the person had to be actually entering your house--door, window etc. Don't know if it's still like that but in one case a guy shot the person on the porch and then pulled him inside the door.
tl/dr: look around for a gun club near you, a gunshop etc. These people could steer you right.

Kek. You forgot to offer him a beverage
Never fire a warning shot. Shoot to kill if your life is legitimately in danger. Let the pieces fall where they may.
I guess the sarcasm was lost on you.
Not at all. Just a warning to people that actually have to live under Communist rule.

Solid points. No cops are anybody's friends. Even the friends from before they were cops have been submitted to massive brainwashing, be careful.

Louisiana shoot away.
Even in Canada you can shoot an intruder but it needs to be self defense so shoot in the front and make sure he's dead.
Florida: blast away.

Google is your friend. Don't get legal advice from strangers on the Interwebs.

Several states have Castle Laws, where home and car are your castle. Perp enters said castle, game on.
