Maybe the state of New York shouldn't have gone on a mission to vexatiously prosecute the president before asking for money?

43
Techrev 43 points ago +44 / -1

What New York has done to Trump is totally insane, across the board.

Right when all this started, I remember Cuomo giving Trump a backhanded compliment saying the Federal Govt had been helping, and him bragging about "I've probably sued Trump more than anyone else." Now I saw something about Cuomo requested a raise April 1, yet healthcare workers who volunteered to go to NY to help out, will now be taxed NY State and City taxes. Its all unbelievable, but that's all these jokes are doing, bankrupting their state in hopes of a Federal Bailout, from decades of mismanagement, coronavirus is now their golden opportunity. I hope Trump and McConnell and whoever else does NOT back down, let them go bankrupt.

18
rebelde_sin_causa 18 points ago +19 / -1

Trump and McConnell have zero political reasons to save the blue states, it isn't going to win them any votes..... except that McConnell's Kentucky is the one red state that's in that kind of trouble

well, Doesn't Kentucky have Dem Gov? Maybe Kentucky needs to be red from now on.

Was there even a reason to go to Hawaii anyways?

Just go to Florida and save yourself half the money. You'll also spend less time in a plane

2
viVbiz-bufmu1-qodmem 2 points ago +2 / -0

I mean. It depends on where you start, right? Anyways. Florida doesn’t have lava.

2

There isn't a single point in the 48 States that is closer to Hawaii than to Florida, especially once you factor in the fact that earth rotates from West to east.

4

Who goes to Hawaii to lock themselves in a Hotel Room?

Well, let's see what happens in Hawaii when the tourists stop coming and they have no money.

I'm from one of these mismanaged socialist states. No bailout! Giving money to these states is like an enabling parent giving more money to a drug addicted child. Cut them off from the teat.

20
McFatty7 20 points ago +21 / -1

I've been a broken record repeating this, but it's still relevant.

My Blue State of New Jersey Gov. Murphy is trying his absolute hardest to convert CARES act money into free money, so that the state can continue normal operations, and not layoff his most important voter base of police, firefighters, EMS, teachers, government workers & unions.

That's why all the Blue State were collectively outraged when Sen. Mitch McConnell suggested that State file for bankruptcy.

Basically, if enough Blue States become burdened with debt, they'll start extorting Congress demanding a bailout or else they'll crash the economy.

NO BAILOUTS FOR BLUE STATES!!!

17
Ragnar_Danneskjold 17 points ago +19 / -2

Unfunded liabilities. That's the game for these Leftist governors. It's not about the virus, and it's not even really about Trump. It's about the billions of dollars of money they have promised to pay out in pensions, social programs, retirement funds, salary increases, etc over the next few decades. And none of them have a fucking dime of that money. They are trying to run the lockdown out as long as possible so when their state collapses, they can get the Feds to use taxpayer money to bail them out from the economic damage "caused by the virus and lockdowns", but watch their slimy duplicitous asses try to slide in paying all of their unfunded liabilities into the bailout bill. They had no fucking idea how to pay for all those teacher and union pensions and healthcare promises. Now we see how they plan to do it. Have the Feds give them a massive check "for the virus" and use that money to stave off going bankrupt from all these deals they have been making with unions for years.

8
Southern_Belle 8 points ago +8 / -0

Isn't it worse than that?

Everything you said makes sense, but I think going further upstream, it's because they stole money and lined their own pockets.

Why else hasn't California finished that high-speed rail? Billions of dollars and the project languishes? Who's got that money and why won't they pay it back?

NY is a couple billion dollars in the hole. Almost one billion is due to Di Blasio giving money to his wife last year or the year before. She has no idea where the first $800,000 went, so he gave her a billion more.

That's close to two billion right there.

13

4
DittoHead 4 points ago +5 / -1

I don’t think he will. He has said as much.

9
HumblePede 9 points ago +10 / -1

So it's my understanding that someone who files for bankruptcy has to open their books entirely and can even have a court appointed representative direct them as to what & how much they can spend while under bankruptcy reorganization. And they may even be ordered to pay certain debt or redirect funds from one expense to another. (I am not a lawyer nor am I a bankruptcy expert.)

If these states do get federal aid, they should have to open their books - every bit of spending should be vetted, any past grants or loans from the federal government should be accounted for. Any mismanaged monies or funds that are spent on things that are not essential to the survival of the small businesses and citizens of these states in need should be redirected. And bloated government agencies should be pared down or eliminated.

No more graft. No more disappearing funds into the pockets of cronies and shell companies that fold right after collecting. Accountability is what's needed. It's long past due.

10
Ragnar_Danneskjold 10 points ago +11 / -1

Put the states asking for bailouts under receivership, just like how a city would have to. You want a bailout, fine. You don't get to run anything anymore. Trump will appoint someone to run the books for you, with total authority to slash unions, cut social programs, fire state bureaucrats, close down entire programs and departments. The real Golden Rule: he who has the gold makes the rules. If they want our gold, we make their rules for them.

4
thrakkorzog 4 points ago +4 / -0

While tempting, the problem is is that doing that kind of kills the concept of Federalism.

I mean it would be nice to have someone like Art Laffer or Larry Kudrow going through CA's books.

But what happens in 5 or 8 years from now when a Dem is the president? Do you think they'll stop the spending, or make it worse? Do you think the Swamp Monsters in DC will be any better than the ones in Sacramento?

6
Ragnar_Danneskjold 6 points ago +6 / -0

Fair points all around. The correct solution is to tell the states that have spent too much that they're on their own and if that causes hardship for the citizens, they can address that by removing and punishing the politicians that caused the problem and find better people to fix it.

But we both know that's never going to happen this side of the Collapse. As they say, you can always vote your way into socialism. But you have to shoot your way out of it.

There is theoretically a way to solve all of this. If all of the people decided to do the right thing, round up and kick out all of the illegals, force out every corrupt politician, say no to every unjust law, etc. The problem is fixable, but only in the most theoretical sense. We can fix it, but we won't. Could Rome have saved the Republic? Sure, in the same way. But the soldiers were too used to getting spoils from ambitious generals and consuls. The plebeians were too addicted to the grain dole and land giveaways. The patricians were too in love with power and social class. The Senate was too obsessed with keeping the trappings of power and didn't want to risk standing up for anything just or right out of fear, ambition, or greed. The Republic could have been saved, but we all know it wasn't and we know why. Because people are people and most will choose to do what is immediately profitable, safe, or comfortable for themselves in the now than what would be the right thing for everyone overall in the future. So we will do the same thing and the problems won't be fixed until everything burns and we have to start over.

1
thrakkorzog 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yep, it sucks, but AFAIK, there's no good solution.

Just saying that the US won't be responsible for the states debts would screw over so many people, and reduce a lot of states bonds to junk status.

While that sounds minor, it would pretty much wreck the economy, which is why no one wants to say it.

1
Ragnar_Danneskjold 1 point ago +3 / -2

I think it's time we all come to the realization that the country is proper fucked and it's going to last our lifetimes no matter what we do. There will be no United States as we know it a few decades from now.

3
Southern_Belle 3 points ago +3 / -0

If we do our job right, there won't BE any Dem presidents.

I'm not concerned about the concept of federalism and here's why.

The states thumbed their noses at it. They are heading toward secession and setting themselves up as commie states. We need to reel them in right now.

The entire democrat strategy has utterly failed and blown up in their faces.

They thought they would tie Trump to Russia - but only exposed their own crimes.

They thought that they would impeach Trump - instead they made him more popular.

They thought they would ruin Trump by destroying his powerhouse economy with a media stoked panic over worse than normal flu season and then destroy Trump supporting small businesses by enforcing draconian lock downs on American freedoms - but instead they exposed their own power hunger and desire to control, and once blue states are turning red fast as democrats seek greater oppression while republicans push for constitutional freedom.

It is as if the Hand of God is elevating Trump and making Trump’s enemies ridiculous.

New York, Michigan, Illinois all need to split themselves into two states and let the leftwing vote-by-race corrupt cities stand on their own.

1
Bramble 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's about funneling federal money to blue causes who then donate it to Dems.

It's also about wealth redistribution. It happens in other ways than just taxes and welfare - by democrats trying to print 3 trillion new dollars, it devalues the money we all have saved and when they give it to everyone (including those who dont work), it dilutes the share the rest of us have. When inflation goes up in the coming years it isn't going to be welfare and government salaries that are slow to respond, it's going to be private sector salary.

Don't forget about Massachusetts. The governor announced we would open today, May 18th. Then last week pushed it off 1 day for administrative reason. Now he came out with overly strict rules for phase 1 opening. So strict we are basically still shut down. Only thing allowed to reopen is construction, church, manufacturers and office building (at 25%).

No retail or small business allowed.
