The dark blue cities are like black holes. The density of the population is so great is sucks down the rest of the surrounding cities with it turning the whole state blue.

Exactly. I have an intelligent, educated friend who has been furloughed and has been a prisoner in her 800 sq apartment for 3 months with her husband and two dogs. You'd think she'd be apoplectic, yet she takes quiet umbrage when I use hurty words like "socialist" and "moron" to describe what De Blasio is doing. She is simply a moron, like most Democrats. No other explanation. Zero sympathy for her.
We're not all commies here in Queens. My family and friends are mainly right wing Trump supporters but all it takes is one government housing unit's vote to bury us. We have ignored quarantine from the beginning, had parties, go to the local bars speakeasy and speak out against Cuomo, I hate the idea of leaving all my family to move to a red state full of strangers.
But are they really? If there was an election tomorrow they would vote for the same Mayor, Governor, and policies they claim to hate

Hey - I’m in New York and bleed Trump. Long Island and upstate NY are conservative majority, but are drops in the bucket by the densely blue boroughs.
